Star Trek vs Transformers 2

Ok, so my brother is a pretty big trekkie and bet me $100 that the opening weekend of Star Trek will gross more than the opening weekend for Transformers 2. I took the bet in a second cause I thought Transformers would be a sure-fire winner. Anyone have any thoughts on the wager?

I'll bet there's more of a following (new and old) for Star Trek than there is for Transformers. They are both powerhouse movies and are awesome... but I still think Star Trek will have more of a following.

Yeah, it's a sequel, but because a franchise has an established base doesn't mean everyone will move by the numbers to the theater. I looooove Wing Commander and the franchise has a huge following whether you believe it or not, yet I would have never put up Wing Commander: The Movie against any movies that weekend.

The following means nothing. A lot of people will wait until it comes out to the DVD to avoid the movie theater. A lot of people will Pirate it. That movie doesn't scream WOW I NEED TO SEE THIS THING ON A BIG SCREEN!!!! LOLOLOL.

if movies werent so expensive and you werent able to get movies off the internet... it might be a true contest... but with todays day and age, maybe its not even really worth debating.

Transformers 1 managed to attract the attention of transformers fans and non- transformers fans. It was an all around good movie regardless of whether or not you are a fan. Star Trek on the other hand will only appeal to star trek fans.

And the main reason Star trek will lose is because, Transformers has Megan Fox!

transformers 2 is a MUST see in theaters...

it really could go either way though. but i see Transformers 2 winning...

I agree with Scape on this one. I saw Star Trek last night after having never seen an episode/ movie/ spin-off of the series in my life, and loved it. However, when the previews for Transformers came on, I nearly lost my load. It is a must see in theaters. Then my true dorkiness kicked in when I saw the preview for G.I. Joe, but that's a totally different story.

well i saw trek at 12:01 like my last post and the movie was spectacular easily a top 3 movie i have seen, and thats coming from a guy who knows nothing about trek.

but to be honest i think transformers 2 will compete with dark knight last year. the theatre i was at wasnt even sold out for the first showing of trek and they only showed it in one theatre.

Well, we'll see. I'm not helping my own cause, but I'm gonna hit up this movie after work with some coworkers. I've seen every Star Trek movie at some point in my life thanks to my mother and brother, so I'm interested to see what all the excitement is about.

You guys that went last night, how many people showed up in costume to your showing? lol

I've seen every previous star trek movie at some point in time and was honestly let down by this movie. It was so pumped up and so praised that I expected something epic, which this movie is most certainly not. It was a good movie, in my opinion 7.5-8 / 10. It had good (not great) special effects, very good acting, and a decent plot. Doing a prequel is always a tricky animal, other huge name series' have failed completely in the attempt. My brother (the gigantic trekkie) called me right after seeing it and bitched for like 30 minutes. I noticed a few big things in the movie that were completely historically inaccurate, but he found a lot more stuff than I did and pointed out how the events in the movie would make a lot of things in the past movies and shows impossible. We both agreed that it was very similar in success to the most recent James Bond movie: successful action movie to the everyday movie-goer, series failure to hardcore fans.

Back on topic . . . my theater was no more than 70% full and I was at the 7 pm showing at the hottest theater in the valley. I think I've got the win in the bet!

Haha, it's Harold, not Kumar. Harold is Sulu in the movie.
