macintosh question...

my mom has an older G5 and a newer iMac... and by newer i mean... bought within the past 1-1.5 years. the G5 being... at least 3-4 years old.

I don't have specs, so consider base models for that time period (though i know they are not strictly base models)

Two questions...

1) which would be better to be doing design work in? flash, photoshop, inDesign, etc.

2) if question 1's answer is G5, is the iMac capable of being used as a monitor for the G5?

I realize i don't have specs... my mom spent about 3k on the G5 a number of years ago, i know she doubled the ram that was in there... so she's either running 1 or 2gb. I don't remember exactly what version of the OS she is running... to many ****ing cats...

I'd hedge my bets on the iMac being the better bet but that's just a guess until you have the specs. A 12-18 month old iMac isn't that dated but a 3-4 month G5 is, even though it's a tower. I've done lots of work in school labs with 2 year old iMacs that have held up to Maya, Final Cut and Compression just fine. Photoshop and inDesign are pretty light in comparision.

It's likely that your iMac is dual core Intel which means that it probably is better than the G5 which at 4 years old has dual processors at most. I recently sold my dual G5 cause it got smoked by a Macbook on a benchmark test. I now own a Macbook pro. Obsoleteness sucks. Buying new Apple products sucks too.

Same as said above me if the Imac is Intel go with that otherwise the G5. Also keep in mind those G5 towers could take crazy amounts of ram so if you go with the tower look into popping 4GB into it. My girlfriend uses her G5 (6 months older then the intel macs) to do work from her for the agency she works for and has no problems at all so either way you will be fine.

i highly doubt theres a way to use the imac as a monitor.... but im sure you can do the other way around and use the monitor of the g5 as a secondary for the imac. unless im completely confusing something here, which i just might be haha
