need a new laptop

can any of you computer guru's recommend a laptop? The toshiba satalite I've been using at home for the last 5 years took a dump on me a couple weeks ago and the wife is on me to replace it ASAP.

I was gonna just go to Best Buy and talk to one of their sales people but I know there are much smarter people here and better deals online to be had.

I'd like to keep it below $1500 and have it by the early part of next week at the latest, otherwise I might be sleeping in the car for a while.

ohh yeah, forgot to mention I don't want a MAC.
I do tuning/logging and some of the programs I use people have problems running on MAC's.

Grab another Toshiba personally. Awesome laptops, decent price.

I've yet to really run into too many issues w/ the ones a few friends have.

dunno myself... but anything with less than 4gb ddr2 memory don't bother with. quad-core processors are something i'm seeing a lot of as well. 500gb harddrives.. etc... just take a look on newegg.com for your price range and see whats on there

Dell re-furbished Search it in google.

you can get an awesome laptop for like $800. their customer service i pretty excellent as well. I know a bunch of people that have gotten laptops thru their re-furbished or scratch and dent area and they all have been very happy with their purchase. My next laptop will be bought thru that.

My GF's laptop cost her $750 shipped. When we went to build the same spec laptop new, it was over $1500. there was not s single scratch or mark on hers. it was immaculate!!!

just had a bad experience with Dell, so I don't want to give them my business.

I have an Asus EeePC that I just got which I love, might go with them again.

Any other suggestions?

lol @ dell refurbished... considering new dell = refurbished parts anyway...

i'll never buy a dell. I've known people with both good and bad stories having those computers...

dell, hp and gateway are all on my "no way in hell will i buy" list

here is my short list:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...220346&bop=And

think its either going to be the 3rd or 4th on from the left. I like the 3rd one cause its got a 500gig HD, the 4th one only has a 320gig but its got a 17" monitor which I know she'll like more.

one has "Intel Centrino 2 Processor Technology", is that anything special?

cons: smaller HD, less video mem & heavier
pros: better battery & bigger monitor

I'm thinking this one though: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834220344

its got a much bigger HD, more vid mem, its lighter & its got 100% positive reviews... tough choice.

for me, i would need the larger monitor.

As i would either be playing games on it, or working... both of which I would need a larger monitor. I've got a 19" widescreen for my desktop... and I very much am in need of a second one for work. So much easier... I'd probably die with a 15"...

work laptop is a 17" widescreen, i'm working from home right now, on the laptop (and doing the fun stuff on my desktop) and its really obnoxious...

it all really depends on what you're using it for.

What exactly is the intended use?

If your not going to get a Mac, you should seriously consider an HP. I have a Gateway now and I'm just praying that it dies on me so I will have an excuse to go by an HP.

HP's suck...

work bought us HP laptops

intel core 2 duo processor
3gb ram
200gb hd
17" screen

they suck... i'm on my third hard drive and second laptop in 4-5 months...
random blue screen
random freezes

I'm not the only one on the team that is having issues... we've gone through 6-7 laptops since they gave them to us 4-5 months ago

i suppose it's better than the dell towers we used to work on... but still... for the 2-3k per laptop they spent... they could have gotten something better...

she will be using it to scrapbook, so organizing pics and layouts & stuff.

I'll be using it for lots of surfing & streaming movies on the interwebz.

I printed out that comparison with the different models and I think I'll just let her pick which one she wants.
