Thinking about buying a handgun

My buddy just bought this gun and I love how it shoots. Plus its made by H&K, so I know it will last me for a while.

http://www.hk-usa.com/p30l_general.html

Mostly for taking to the range, but it would be nice to have it at home too, seeing as how my neighbor's house just got broken into. Just very surprised that it happened in my area, because its the definition of the suburbs.

honestly dude, accidents happen from guns, if you get one for your house, have it in a lock box or something that can't be broken into at all, its for your safety and the people around you, i don't know you, i'm not assuming anything, but prepare yourself for the worse that could happen, most people will tell you handguns are fine to have, my question is,

do you have any kids?

Nope, no kids.

But I am also worried that if somebody breaks in, they would use it on me. I would have to prepare myself to be able to use it on somebody before I even bought it.

I am a gun nut... i hav my CCW ... which i regret getting..

but having a gun in your house is second to having a dog in your house... or in my case 2 pit bulls.

security systems are great and all but ill take to 90 lbs dogs and a gun any day

It's a nice gun, good choice. I just happen to like the USP's grips better (mostly because it's what I'm used to).

9mm is nice and "cheap" (relative) to plink with at the range, and it will do just fine as a self defense round. If you have already tried the P30L, try a couple different guns and make your decision from there. If you still like it the best, buy it.

I grew up with guns in the house, as did my other siblings, as did the generations before, as did hundreds of other people that I know. There were never any accidents caused by guns. Moronic parents might have caused accidents, but guns rarely (in the form of a true accidental discharge, which is extremely rare) cause accidents.

If you leave a self defense gun in a lock box, it's not going to do you any good when it's time to use it. But sure, if you are not in the house, by all means, don't leave it readily accessible, in the open, without you around. The best option is still carrying it.

Sorry to get sidetracked.

How does getting your license to carry a concealed weapon work? What do you need to do?

Go to your township building, and fill out the form. Hand the form back in to the police station. They will run a couple different background checks, check your references, and if they have any information from your records they will note it. They will then sign off on it.

Now you will go to your county court, where the sheriff's department will run more background checks. They will notify whether or not you get your permit by passing the checks, and you will give $46 (I THINK, don't quote me on that, it might have changed). You get a card with your picture taken, and you can now carry where allowed by state/federal law.

BTW, PA is an open carry state. You can openly carry a handgun without any permits, where allowed by state/federal law.

Oh, so if somebody shot you, you would still keep coming at them, knowing they still have 13 more rounds in the clip?

Or more. My Springfield XD-9 as a 16 round magazine.

But I'd say go to a gun store that has lots of different models, like Cabelas, and hold a bunch of different ones. See what feels comfortable. The XD-9 felt the best in my hands so that is the one I chose.

I just need to get out the range more.

I also have my license to carry, it was less tedious where im from..I guess the procedure varies from county to county..In bucks i just went to the locally gov. building filled out the 2 page application, gave them a check for $46, she told me they would send it to the state and it would go through background checks and then if everything was good they would send the license to the same building and i could pick it up in 2-3 weeks. Well i got a call 5 days later saying it was there and i could pick it up..ha never seen the gov. work so fast. I heard in philly you need to show they you know how to handle a gun or something before you can even get the application..

i picked up the glock 22 .40 cal, conceals nicely, wish it was a little smaller but i can carry without being it seen...so its not too bulky, and it is a very acurate and reliable hand gun. Oh and only paid $450 for it with 2 15 round clips, the h&k's are nice but very expensive..

So what you're saying is, I can keep a gun on me as long as it is visible?

I guarantee if i did that I'd be in lock up lol... the first thing out of a cops mouth would be, "where is your permit to carry?"

"open carry state officer, i'm allowed to have the gun w/o a permit as long as it is visible"

"get on the floor!"

I know you can have one in your house w/o a permit, and you can travel with one as long as the ammo and gun are in separate sections of the vehicle.

I been wanting a gun for a while, but no one is breaking into my apartment... 8th floor, no easy escape route... and they're not running down 8 flights of stairs, or waiting for the elevator carrying the only thing worth any money in my apartment (tv)

Cops are always in the area and they'd be waiting outside before the burgler had gotten to the ground floor

actually if someone is really enraged or crazy and they are coming at you a 9 mil wont stop them with 1 or 2 shots...i've heard of people getting shot 5 or 6 times with a 9 before going down...but at the same time 90% of the time if you even fire off 1 round its gonna do the trick and the person coming at you is gonna stop..

however if you want some stopping power thieres nothing like a nice 40 or 45 with some hollow points

actually i did hear that it was open carry as well and yes if you are of age you can carry with out a permit..would i really wouldn't recommend going anywhere with a gun just hanging out because you are gonna get stopped and questioned non stop by cops and if you walk into a 7-11 or gas station they might think the worse and then you will be a robbery suspect..ha oh and dont even think of crossing a bridge into nj with a gun on you..that = fellony
