Senator Barack Obama accused his Republican rivals on Wednesday of stirring “phony outrage” over a colloquial comment he made one day earlier about putting “lipstick on a pig,” which he said was a clear reference to Senator John McCain’s policies not a derogatory slur against his running-mate.

“Enough!” Mr. Obama said, interrupting a speech on education to address the latest controversy in the heated presidential campaign. “I don’t care what they say about me, but I love this country too much to let them take over another election with lies and phony outrage and swift boat politics. Enough is enough.”

In southern Virginia on Tuesday night, Mr. Obama was delivering a spirited attack about Mr. McCain’s pledge to change Washington, likening the approach to trying to put lipstick on a pig. (”It’s still a pig,” he said to loud applause.) The comment instantly caught fire, with associates of Mr. McCain suggesting it was a degrading remark aimed at Gov. Sarah Palin, the Republican vice presidential candidate.

The Obama campaign, which has already been grappling with how to deal with the newfound popularity of Ms. Palin, responded forcefully in a statement. But aides said the controversy would almost certainly not blow over unless Mr. Obama addressed it directly, which he did in the opening minutes of a campaign event in a high school library.

“What their campaign has done this morning is the same game that has made people sick and tired of politics in this country. They seize on an innocent remark, try to take it out of context, throw out an outrageous ad because they know it’s catnip for the news media,” Mr. Obama said. “I’m assuming you guys heard this watching the news. I’m talking about John McCain’s economic policies and I said here’s more of the same, ‘You can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig. Suddenly, they say, Oh you must be talking about the governor of Alaska!’”

As the audience applauded, he added: “See it would be funny, it would be funny except, of course the news media decided that was the lead story yesterday. The McCain campaign would much rather have the story about phony and foolish diversions than about the future.”

I don't know what you are getting at. Obama still bashed Palin, and McCain/Palin responded. Sure, they took it out of context, just like Obama does all the time. It's tough to argue with that, but nobama sure did use the wrong choice of words! Besides, the crowd figured out what he meant on their own by their laughs.

Who is that other old DC guy running with nobama anyway? And doesn't that obama guy have better things to talk about during his speeches other than bitches and pigs?

And BTW, as of late, I have never seen so many BASH MCCAIN videos from the Obama camp. They're mostly bashing the VP though, so, it makes it funnier.

He was bashing the Palin/McCain ticket policies by stating that you can make them sound good, but they aren't. I don't know how you DON'T see that as an attack. That's right, only McCain's campaign can attack obama. But if you didn't hear the crowd laughing when obama said it, I don't know what you were watching. They certainly assumed that he was referring directly to Palins lipstick comment from her speech.


And yes, there are certainly more important things to talk about other than putting make-up on farm animals. I don't know what kind of weird fantasies obama has. Both parties are pathetic on this one.

i watched the vid with no sound, but i dont think shes a drifter. Either way, you're a moron. Also, for the mccain campaign to call that sexists is pathetic, it was clearly not sex related in any way shape or form. Although i do see the attack on his policies.

There was a video on CNN that showed Bush, Chainey, McCain, etc... using it. Watch the whole clip of when Obama said it... he was talking about McCain having the same policy as bush, an how hes trying to cover up those facts.

This whole campaign has officially jumped the shark (figure that one out). We have a war in iraq, a huge economy problem, and all the news media can talk about is whos daughter is pregnant or whos pig is wearing lipstick. I swear this whole thing reminds me of the 4th grade.

I absolutely agree it was a snide comment against the POLICIES of McCain, but it had absolutely nothing to do with Palin and that's what they turned it into. Did you watch the ad that's on McCain's website in the first link in the post? It's completely misleading and a little ridiculous. I'm not trying to say that only McCain has negative things to say at all, but I do see a difference in what's being attacked.

And again, as for the reaction from the crowd, I think you give them too much credit. I watched a lot of the RNC, but I didn't catch most of Palin's speech (including the lipstick line) and I wouldn't have connected it with that at all. You really think everyone in that crowd watched Palin's RNC speech and immediately thought, oh lipstick, he must be talking about Palin?? I think the reaction was simply for making a "comical" analogy.

well, im not sure everyone in this thread took the time to go through all the links before making any remarks.

lipstick on a pig, still a pig - is a commonly used expression in politics as is clearly noted in the links.

Obama wasnt using that remark to smear Palin, but to describe McCains policies (as CLEARLY stated)

the McCain campaigns reaction is definately "4th grade-ish" aka immature, they drop the importance of thier own policies and would rather waste time pointing fingers that someone else called them names. Sure signs of a loser in my book.

Obama made that clear in his speech, that as political officials, they have wasted too much time over drama as opposed to addressing the real issues. It happens every election period, and we as the people are the ones that end up getting screwed.

I personally dont see any difference from McCain and Bush, cause he is on record as voting with Bush 90% of the time while Bush was in office, no one wants the same bull**** again.
