Bank Error: in my favor?

I just checked my checking account online to make sure my rent check was received and cashed. Rent is $2000.oo/month, but the bank has my check cashed for $200.00. It clearly says "two thousand" so it couldn't be an error on my part. Do you think my land lord got all 2000 and they just messed up in the computer somehow? Think they'll change the amount to the right amount or did i just get an extra 1800 this month?

Yeah I know, rent is ridonk. But it's a 4br, 4ba huge old house in wynnefield. There are5 of us, so that helps.

Me and my landlord are tight. If there is an issue, he'd call me and it wouldn't be a problem. I looked at the image of the check to make sure i didn't f up, and it clearly says "two thousand" and it has $2000.00 written, so it's clearly not my fault. And I have more than enough funds to cover it so it's nothing with that either.

well if your landlord did get all of his money, you could consider the banks mistake in your favor, unless they catch it. if he really only got 200 in his account, then you better believe you'll hear about it.

My younger cousin had a similar act in his favor..but he was the one cashing a check...he had a check for $40.10, and the dumbass teller gave him $401. lol But since it was cash, the teller probably didn't know where he screwed up at the end of the day. Nothing ever came of it. Free money FTW.

Say he got all of his money and it's only an error on my side...how long until I can feel the money isn't going to get taken away?

Remember...You are responsible for keeping track of your account, so if they later correct the error and overdraft, you will now incur fees! I am sure you can fight that, but it will be a real pain. Nothing good is free, and nothing free is good.

I wouldn't expect the bank to allow the error to slide. They will probably contact you and let you know that they are removing the money before they do. I bank with Commerce and when I cashed a check they gave me back $100 more dollars in cash then the check was for, they called me later to let me know they were taking out the difference from my checking account.

I'm sure tonight when they close out their drawers tonight they will realize that there's an error and recheck all of the transactions from the day. I wouldn't count on them not realizing it. Someone won't be balanced and they won't just say "oh well".

Yeah, I'll fully expect for the money to be taken out. But that extra 1800 would be so nice.

Well technically isn't only a fifth of it yours? If you do get the extra $1800...you really should be splitting it with your roomies! Just sayin though....

but...2 grand a month?! GOOD GOD.

Only 3 guys are living in the house/paying this summer so I would be splitting it with them, but I don't want to do that yet, just in case they do the adjustment.
