Anyone ever have to ship a car?

So my aunt has an old mercedes she wants to get rid of and says she will give to me however she will not allow me to fly over and drive it back. So I have to look for car transportaion somehow. Have any of you ever had to ship a car? Looking to do this as sheap as possible. I dont care wether its enclosed. or the car is particularly "babied". As long as it doesnt roll off the trailer and makes it here in one piece I'll be happy.

The car is a 85-88 (not sure exact year) Mercedes 300D. I was told the brakes need work and the car hasnt been started in over 2 years. Car is located in Palo Alto, CA. (Burbs of San Francisco)

Anyone know any good companies or have friends or hookups or anything of that nature? Hell even if friends or family are moving from there to somewhere nearby I'll pay for a uhaul trailer and some gas to throw it onto the back of the moving truck.

at work we use McNut transport, but I think they only ship if they can drive them onto the truck

I have shipped about 5 cars and use autotransportdirect.com. So far I haven't had a problem with them and they were pretty cheap.

There are online services (google is your friend) that allow you to accept bids from tons of transport companies. I have done it twice now with good results.
Companies email you their bids and you pick.

I paid $700 to ship a civic to CA about 3 years ago through a major shipping company. Gas prices have increased quite a bit since then. What Paledsm was talking about sounds like a good idea.

I had my car shipped from alaska, and the shipping company is based there, so I can't recommend a company. But what the others said above are good suggestions.

Based on what I paid a few months ago, you should expect to pay around $900 to ship it from CA on one of those open-sided double decker car carrier trucks.

I am having one hell of a time overcoming a language barrier with the driver bringing a Mini up from Alabama. Doesn't speak a word of English. At first I couldn't figure out why the driver wouldn't return my calls, then he did call and I quickly realized he can't speak English. He was dispatched to pick it up yesterday and drop it off at my place tomorrow...he didn't pick it up until 1pm today. If this guy shows up on my front yard @3am in that carrier, I'm going to flip. This guy is messing up my plans to go to Pinks tomorrow!

I got my Accord shipped from New Orleans to Pennsylvania, not exactly sure on the price. They did a good job, car did not have any damage. Here is a link to the company's website.
