Here we go...

Alright then, since it seems to be a semi-amusing topic for me, and a hateful topic for some of you, lets start a thread here about Saturns.

So, why do you hate them? What is your reasoning?

I'll make all my attempts to refute you reasoning and to point out what may be overlooked or not understood.

I don't know about mine, per say, but saturns in general, there are some on this board that will not drive a car simply because it's badged a Saturn.

I'm looking for actual reasons why, because everyone I've challeneged to come up with a reason hasn't provided one.

I do believe that there are a few on here that don't like my car either, simply because it's a Saturn.

It's the rubbermaid car, they're all plastic and not amazingly well built. Then there's the performance, which is rather appauling if you were dumb enough to get a SOHC engine. The car just seems to ooze cheapness really.

I'm really just interested in why. You wouldn't be interested if a bunch of people say they hate SRT-4's? (using it as an example, not saying I hate it).

They're actually extraordinarily well built. Why do you say they're not? The vibration is due to the polymer (not really plastic, it is pretty much rubbermaid) that can flex and contract depending on if it's hot or cold, which is also a reason why such big gaps are in between each panel. If it were hot, and anyone elses panels were to expand like a saturns, then you wouldn't be able to open your door or your hood. So, in order to keep the car light and keep the polymer, they used big panel gaps in cold factories to keep everything constant.

Performance is a huge issue with the SOHC. I won't even touch that subject. It was worthless engine built soley for people that decided they didn't want to move in their car. Otherwise, 124bhp on a 2300lb car is a ton of power to make it scoot easily. 18.5lbs/1hp is a fairly good ratio for an economy car, especially if a stock stick version can run high 15's and still get 31mpg.

Oozing cheapness...well...they really only did cost 15k, but hey! Can't complain about fully independant macpherson style suspension!

Well, that's almost true. It was babied under the first owner for 40k miles, so I'm still dealing with the damage of that. 210/210/185/210. All within service limit, but it'll be fixed soon. Going to buy some seafoam later to fix the 3rd and unstick the rings, since no dealerships sell GM-TEC I have to resort to lower quality stuff.

I don't like pedestrian cars. Be they Camry's or SL2's. It's nothing personal, just a car that is made for the cheap, the elderly, or people who aren't enthusiasts just don't blow my skirt, well...anywhere.
I will respect them if they get done well, though.

I can definitely see where you're coming from. Then again, the S-series engines, if not driven hard, will break. Literally.

If they don't see high RPM's a lot of the time, they will break in odd places. My car had a destroyed water pump among many other things. The original owner never took the car above 3.5k rpm. I take it to the 6k shift almost all the time in first gear. The amount of carbon that builds up in the heads is extreme...revving these engines high causes them to run at peak temp (EGT about 900 stock) and it almost completely cleans the chambers.

I do honestly see where you're coming from, as I'm not a big fan of strict commuter cars either, (aka: metro, storm, camry...) but that doesn't mean I hate them and would never drive one. And to see one done up is even more intriguing, in my opinion, especially if done correctly.

Hahaha. I told you. It's the reason why they have next to no aftermarket support...and what they DO have, costs an arm and a leg because it's not high demand and not in stock. (ie: forged rods are 700/set of 4, and forged pistons any CR any bore are 500/set of 4 w/o rings)

Not many people care for 1st gen DSMs.
But it is a cult status car.

not really,.. im used to it

except its never that they hate srt-4's, they always hate neons, and when they get smoked by one and have to own up to it THEN its an srt-4

really doesnt bother me. i bought my car for me and noone else.

and to be more specific i think my personal dislike towards saturns(well,.. not so much dislike but more like indifference) is just like someone else said.. they dont really interest me being as they are primarily grocery getters. just like non srt neons, civics, corollas, non ser sentras, non S mini's, and cavaliers(to name a few) dont interest me.

thats nothing against your particular car as it is a rare example of them

It's true. They were designed as primary commuter cars with a bit of oomph. (albeit, running a stock 12:1 afr on an n/a car was not the brightest idea, but it still got people to where they wanted to go), and then they thought that a coupe would be a good idea and get the kids into it. But hey! There's no difference in drag coefficients unless you get a wagon! Even then it's only a .001 or something difference.

And thanks...I think that was a compliment...right?

That's the thought I was having. Kinda was wondering what would cause it, so I started this thread. But it seems like not all of the people have posted yet.

Hahaha, that brings up this funny post about some poor guys Saturn that got caught in a fire. The frame was completely fine, but the entire exterior (minus hood/roof/trunk) was melted off and or, dried into dent-resistant drips and the like.

My friend has a Saturn SC1 with the SOHC engine and an auto, OMG it crawls! He once had it over 100, took it a while though. God gas mileage though, it gets in the 40's. I think it's what other people have mentioned, most saturns suffer from a numbness present in most cars built to only go from A to B. My mom's camry is a great car for her, very reliable. Every time I drive it I'm amazed at how well Toyota engineers have completely removed any and all feel from the car. There is no feel through steering wheel, none through the seat and nothing through the pedals. So I guess we hate them cause they're boring, they represent everything we hate about the auto industry today.
