Wifi question

Down at the shore my neighbor has wifi that he lets me use but the signal is very week most of the time 20-40%. It always drops signal and is quite annoying. Is there anything that I can buy to amplify the signal in my house?

Actually there is a lot you can do...

If your buddy has a linksys wireless router/ap, you can put 3rd party firmware on it to bump up the wattage a little bit to give you more signal. Also, check out alfa wireless products. My buddy has one (500mW with a 16dB antenna) and he picks up APs from outer space (not really.. just sayin it's got very good gain).

I am assuming you won't be buying the neighbor parts and the solution would be on your side. The problem is your laptop's antenna isn't the biggest and the girls tell you all the time that your antenna is too small or nonexistent. Depending on your laptop, sometimes you can buy external antennas. If not, you will want to look into a usb style external wirelss antenns such as this. Or if you are using the laptop on a desk you can go wired with a device like this bridge.

Anything really to boost range. External Antennas are a good option. If needed, offer him the parts as well for a higher db antenna.

Yeah there is my wall and his wall and about 20 feet of space. Also not sure if the wind affects the signal but there is a some wind down here today. My room has a few windows and a big sliding glass door they are all open.

yeah man grab a wireless card from alfa. Should be able to get at least 60-75% signal with the 500mW card.

They have worked VERY well for me in the past. Especially if you can mount them outdoors and direct it at the router or wireless broadcast antenna!

Okay i ordered the alpha product off ebay got it in 2 days. I just installed it and walked down my driveway which is about a mile long. At the bottom of my driveway I had 72% signal. can't wait till I go to the shore to see how it works.
