Help with my homework?

Its not exactly car related, but it is engine related, so here goes. Ive got a list of symptoms and a list of causes, I cant seem to match them. Alot of the symptoms seem like they could be from some of the same causes, or the same same causes could cause several symptoms, eh, what the hell.
symptoms list:
A. Spark plug fouling
B. black smoke from exhaust at idle
C. black smoke from exhaust at cruise
D. High cyl head temps
E. RPM drop and power loss at cruise
F.detonation
G. blue smoke from exhaust
H backfiring
I. after firing
J. pre ignition
K. excessive oil consumption

now for the list of causes.
1. excessively rich idle
2. excessivley lean idle mixture
3. main air bleed clogged
4. idle air bleed clogged
5. insufficient valve overlap
6. excessivle valve overlap
7. high C.A.T.
8. carbeurator ice
9. impreperly fitted baffles
10. too low octane fuel
11. induction leak(naturally aspirated)
12. leaky primer
13. pre-ignition
14. feathered edge on a valve
15. high float level
16. high oil pressure
17. excessive valve to guide clearance.

What are the instructions? If you're going to mooch answers off of people without even trying to learn about your trade, I hope you never work on an engine in any car I ever own.

From the symptoms you can tell that the car is burning oil, and running too rich, but the "causes" are way to vague. A lot of them sound like additional symptoms.
If i had to guess i would say that its either 5 or 6 since valve problems are the only things from that list that could effect a/f ratio and oil consumption.

That is my point lagos, the instructor who made these job sheets is not the instructor teaching the class, and both were gone today so i wasnt sure what to do. I ended up asking another instructor, but still I dont know how i am expected to diagnose these problems. Obviously i can tell a few obvious "problems" but there are several things that could cause those problems. Like the high cyl head temperature could be either improperly installed baffles or an excessively lean mixture.

detonation caused by too low octane fuel.
Pre-ignition by high air temps

really though, a lot of things on the one list would cause a lot on the others. What were the exact directions to the assignment.

those were two that i had answered today, i was hoping somebody could confirm those, thank you.
Literally, the only directions were to match the list of symptoms with the list of causes, it was sort of insane, the time allowed was 3.0 hours
