Rude people on the phone....I don't get it?

I have to hit the phones hard, I am in sales. One thing I am having a hard time figure out is why some of these people, actually most of these people...before they even know I am a salesman, are just blatantly rude and ignorant. IMO anytime a phone rings to my business I would want to convey the happiest possible tone. Why would I want to do business with people who are rude and miserable. One lady I called even hung up on me when I asked for the owner, by name, before she even knew if I was a current customer or prospective customer. Its sh***y businesses like this that should be shut down...customer service folks, please.

Im in tech support over the phone (inbound calls for APC), and its still almost as bad sometimes as when I did outbound sales (MBNA). People just are rude, inconsiderate, and a good part of the time, nasty.

Hence, why I wont do sales at where I work now. Cant stand it.

Thats because no one really wants to deal with telemarketers, even though you may not be one. Everyone here justs hangs up. The big problem is they call the wrong place for their questions, we are corporatly owned. So we make no desicons here. At my previous job my one co-worker used to play games with them. We can also tell when it's tele-sales.

umm ok...

I definitely do not call that quickly after I am told the person is not available. Depending on the situation I give it anywhere from 2-7 days for me to follow up. And another thing is....unless you tell me honestly you do not want what I am trying to sell (even though I am not trying to sell over the phone, just trying to qualify and possibly setup an appointment) I will keep calling. So many people could just be like "you know what I appreciate the call but I am not interested. Thanks." But no people must be rude and difficult. And to play tricks I guess could be funny depending on the telemarketer.

Eh..... w/ telemarketers, ive given up. That, and registered for the do not call list, which actually works.

And with my job now, its people calling ME, not the other way around. And they still get pissed when I gotta tell 'em, its broke. You need a new one. Its not under warrenty anymore.

Well we also get a lot of automated crap, were a machine is talking to us so we just hang up. Then we also get real telemarketers, and even if you called and we told you we were not interested, we would still get more from other companies. So we really don't determine who's nice and who's not, we treat them all the same. I usaully just hang up, because it's easy to tell when theirs a telemarketer on the phone. So, maybe should fine another line of work that is less frustrating, maybe taking inbound calls only.

Try being the receiver of the calls. Being a small business owner, my phones ring nonstop during my busy seasons. I usually get ~6 calls per day from people trying to sell me something. Roughly 10 calls per day from people asking for donations to their 'charity'. This stuff gets old quickly and makes me want to do nothing less than kill the caller(s).

Don't take the rude stuff too hard T-, I just get frustrated when I get a call from some place saying something like 'Our records show that your company and it's employees could benefit from our payroll service'. I'm left with no option but to reply with something like 'Thats funny as ish! My records show that I AM THE ONLY EMPLOYEE. I THINK I CAN HANDLE THE PAYROLL!!

I won't get into the charity crap. Those calls really burn my diesel.

Not necessarily. Often times the people who call are so damn dumb they don't know their bellybutton from their asshole.
And it can get REAL frustrating REAL fast to try to talk a client through a computer related problem over the phone when they have no idea what they are looking at lol.

Most of the times if possible I just ask the person, (if it's not my in staff people, cuz those guys I can just take a walk to) if they have highspeed and I'll use one of several programs to remote into them and I just tell them I'll call them back when I'm done.

Thank goodness my IT work isn't in help desk support...that's phone calls all day long lol.

the main problem i see here, is that you take what random strangers say way to personally.
I am one of those rude people. If you call me at the wrong time, and it's not something i deem important, i will be rude to you. You interrupted my life to better yourself or your company. I don't need that interruption. As far as customer service goes, I try to be as polite as possible because I know anger will only get you put on hold for hours. But sometimes there are ignorant people that don't listen and make you repeat the information over and over and over again. at that point i loose my cool.

you can't change people nor their view of any tele-sales. In this society, if we the consumer want something, we will find it and buy it, we don't need random people trying to convince us as to why i should by their product that I never heard of. Obviously if i needed it, i would have found you.
but thats just my view. and I've been told I'm an @ss from time to time. such is life

Yeah that too. I use to be a field tech at my previous job a few years ago. If I was at a site and I need more parts I'd have to call the respective computer company...(I.E Dell, HP etc.) and damn I hated their tech support.

Not only did they barely speak English, but they never worked on the laptops or PCs that I was actually fixing, they just read from a screen and they would talk to me like I didn't know what I was doing. I've had them argue with me and tell me that the part I want isn't going to fix the issue. I even yelled at a few and asked the person if he had ever worked on the laptop I was fixing...he replied no so I was like "then shut up and send me the part I asked for." lol.

But yeah on the note about being rude...I'm sorry but I'm an ass to so many callers that call me at home. Often I don't even give them the chance to speak. Just yell at them and hang up lol.

i think the feeling is mutual. Most people aren't all that excited to get on the phone with tech support.

Doesn't mean they have to carry an attitude with me when they call. If you want my help, treat me like a human, and don't be a rude **** with me. I am more than glad to help people who are friendly to me. When you call me up and just expect me to either read your mind or deal with you when you made stupid demands, then I have no interest whatsoever in helping.
