can you tell the good coilpack from the bad?
![]() i had two like this and two with oil in them. which means for all those who have seen the nsx, you only saw it with 2-4 cylinders. its holy ****ing omg fast now lol. well maybe not super quick but it sure scared me when i shifted hard into second and it walked! it'll be out at FW tomorrow provided i dont get work |

coil packs can be ohm tested for resistance. Find the primary coils, spec is usually between 1-3 ohms. The secondary coils should be within 6000-30000 ohms. Check you manuf specs just to be sure. Also, your coil pack may be oil filled so having oil in them is ok, but oil leaking out is not.

if u wanna be technical, and i always do, those are not coil packs. those are coils.
i see alot of piston cars with dead coils (in COP ignition) bc oil gets to them. oil gets there from leaking valve cover gaskets. dave check those gaskets for oil bc some times the oil leakage is from them. i also have individual coils and (CNP ignition) and i had to replace two of mine today bc they were dying too. i can attribute their death to the heat but urs is clearly oil. u can also test coils by timing light if they are CNP like my car. but most cars recently are COP so u dont have wires...... COP can be checked of their resistance, like pete said. but as for specs on how much ohms, thats to the oems who made it. they are not all the same! |

Oh christ... I HATE those damn single coils.
It's funny. They claim twice the life of a batch fire pack because they only have to fire half as much. But every time I hear of a coil failure it's those retarted things. And while they might be able to provide a stronger spark... nothing short of a blown Viper needs that kind of ignition power. I got 175,000 on my 4cyl batch fire coil and it's singing along merrily. ![]()
