Twincharger Concept Pic
![]() I've seen the Turbo/Supercharge Twincharge setup work through the use of valves...but I'd never seen a 2 in 1 setup. For those of you who don't quite get the image...One compressor works as both a supercharger and a turbo...the shaft from the turbo is connected to the engine crankshaft which causes it to work like a supercharger at lower RPMs and then when the turbo spools it overrides the rotations from the engine with the use of a freewheel, similar to that on your bicycle pedals, turning it into a full fledged turbo. Has anyone ever seen/heard of a similar setup...and do you think it would work? Last edited by jb1830; 08-15-2007 at 01:56 PM. |

Jon, you now have to do this to your Corolla or you're banned.

Isn't VW doing this with the Golf in Europe? I've heard it's very unsmooth.

This is not a Procharger and this is not the same as the VW...A procharger is a type of supercharger that only produces boost at high rpms (VTEC is probably more effective than this).
This is the VW twincharger system: ![]() Notice the Roots supercharger at the top...This uses a clutch to disengage once the Turbo kicks in...(probably why you've heard its unsmooth). On the original concept pic I posted you can see that there is no Supercharger...just a regular Turbo that is connected to the crank like a supercharger and then with the use of a freewheel allows the exhaust driven turbine to take over when the RPMs are high enough. Theoretically this would provide smooth continuous boost both at low RPMs and at high RPMs...This would be the perfect boost setup...and I was wondering why it hasn't been done... Maybe I'll do what Spock said...I'm going to have to try it on the corolla |

you would need an entirely custom turbo. And I still dont see how it will work efficiently.

Good luck keeping a belt together with the heat from the turbine right there. . . on the plus side the compressor temps would be lower. Balancing the assembly would be a bitch too. Someone tried something similar but using hydrolic fluid to spool it instead of a belt.

I'm sure someone said that about variable valve timing and control.
