Ok, I can do a small amount, but I don't have that much time.

Ej is the engine code: IE: A version 7 STi in Japan had an EJ207. Meaning it was EJ - 2.0L turbo.

VF is for the turbo's: IE: The largest turbo is VF22 - VF23.

Hope this helps, I would post more but I am short on time atm.

na it doesnt work like that, there's no real method to it.

and yeah the EJ20 or EJ25 (or EJ18) is an indication of the size of the engine

EJ = Subaru 4 cylinder designation
Next two numbers are displacement, EJ25X is 2.5L, EJ20X is 2.0.
Last letter/number is just revisions and versions of the motor

EJ20G - Original WRX/STi motors (version 1-2) in japan ranged in years from 94-97, some EJ20Gs were around in WRX wagons up until 97.
EJ20K - Version 3-4 WRX/STi motors, 97-98. Changed up the design from the EJ20G, lighter pistons, open deck, better heads, etc.
EJ207 - Version 5-8. 99 until now. The GC/GM chassis/RS chassis ended in japan in 2000 when the new bugeye chassis came which had a v7 motor. Blobeye in japan has the v8 motor. Further refined past the EJ20Ks
EJ257 - United states STi motor, 2.5L.
EJ205 - US WRX motor

VF22s were stock on JDM WRX Type RA motors (which are monsters I hear) and VF23s are stock on JDM STi Type RA motors. Difference between them is that the 23 was ball bearing but smaller coldside I believe.

The second link someone ripped from another site, but it still accurate.
