So, this is stemming from a Car Needed bit in FS/FT.

What do all you guys do, that you afford STis, Evos, basically all the cars you see at your average friday night TST meet? I make freakin $7.50 an hour at Autozone, and with a kid on the way, I desperately need something that pays better, not to mention would allow me to do low-level tuning on SOMETHING.

So, if that was too long for you to read, basically..

What do you do for a living, what do you drive, and what do you get paid on estimate? (Anyone whose mom and/or dad pays for their car and existence need not post!) I'll start..

I work in Edison as the AutoCAD manager, and I'm working on taking on a bit more responsibility to cover their marketing dept. as well. When I started at my current job i was making $13 an hour, and within 2 years I am now making roughly $50k a year. I also have been working in the industry for over 6 years. Oh and I do freelance design on the side.

Not sure of your age, but the best bet is to focus in on something you enjoy, and or are good at, and then stick with it. A few years later you'll be on the road to a better financial status.

Suffice to say I'm still wanting to get out of my SRT since I just started this job and want to save money. I don't need much since it literally takes me 5 minutes to get to work. I'd love to pick up a used miata, late 90's early 2k.

Most of the people on here get the money from their parents (no bashing, just pointing out the obvious, even though lots don't admit it), and some of us work. Some have good credit and get great deals on car loans/the purchase price (what I have done), and others make enough to pay in cash.

I'm an electrician who also does a bunch of side work with electrical as well as renting out/operating equipment. I don't have any cool cars as I'm saving for my dream home, but average electricians on the lowest level in this area have a salary of close to $50,000. A starting salary for an electrician is around $30,000 in the area. Full wage and/or good electricians can make well over $70,000, self-employed/small business electricians can make well over $100,000.

Don't pay the man, find a way of working for yourself to get rid of those killer taxes.

EDIT: $7.50/hour is HORRIBLE (again, no offense). In high school, I worked as a cashier at Genuardis (grocery store) and made $9.50 an hour. I'm SURE that anyone could find a job that pays better then $7.50/hour if they really wanted to. When you say "C-ville", do you mean "Collegeville"? If so, there are lots of small contractors (lots of new construction and renovations ) up that way that would pay your over $10, often under the table.

How old are you? What are your skills? Education? If you don't have any set skills, get an education.

I'm only 20 and still in college but during the summers i do residential construction. Been doing it with the family business for 6 years and make $12.50 (could be making more but i do it more to help out than to profit off of.) Become a nurse dude, my gf just graduated and got a job starting at $25.50. One of her friends got the nightshift in the baby area and is making $40/hour(straight out of 2 years of schooling) and i've heard of shifts going up to $60/hr on some days when they are short of workers (holidays and such)
They pay guys even more because with the girls, sometimes it takes like 2-3 to move larger patients so men are valuable because they can sometimes do the work of a few girls.

not sure what your education and skills are, but start there. if you dont have the education or skills, see how you can go about getting them. getting involved with a company where there is room to grow is a big plus, even if you start at the bottom at first. pay your dues, put in your time, and your responsibilities, pay, and vacation time will grow a lot.
i cant see much potential at a chain like autozone, mcdonalds, or wherever else, but thats just my guess. i feel like any half competent person can probably find a job making at least $10 an hour to start, and it'll grow over time.
you'd be surprised at how well some people get paid for doing so little. how do you think some of the tst members spend so much time on here
edit: with a kid on the way i would definitely recommend that you start looking onward and upward in the job market. i'm sure you can get better pay than that. but in the meantime keep the current job because you never know how long it'll take to find something new.

I work at a friends restaraunt cooking, and I work here and there for my dad, who is a commercial painting contractor. If I want more mods, I work full time and scrounge up some pennies.. and blow it all on pipes and gizmos :P

It's hard to work full time while I'm still in school, though. I'm 22.. I should be living on my own.. but I save a lot of money by living at home.

It's not all about money. With nursing comes the HORRIBLE hours that are often endured. God bless them, and more are needed, so it's not a bad suggestion. It's not cakewalk either though.

Another suggestion, if you are going the higher education route, get your diploma in whatever is the easiest and apply at an insurance company. My girlfriend just got a job with a starting salary of $46,000, straight out of college.

Just graduated college, and as just offered a job with APC (NOT the car parts place), $35K annually, benefits, and that kinda stuff. Start working there on June 11th, which im pretty excited about. Actually, they are calling my references right now.

I currently am unemployed. I just quit my job at wal-mart because they were dickin me around and I was fed up with the whole place, and pretty much everyone I worked with. I currently drive a 92 Rustang, and am getting ready to start ATC in june. I'm hoping with decent training and all of that jazz, I should be able to start around 30K a year, and work my way up from there. Ninja EDIT: I'm only 19, and the only thing my parents (well my mom, my dads a rich a-hole who wont let go of any money) pay for is currently my insurance and gas. I try to provide for myself as much as possible because my mom is on permanent disability and we are "technically below poverty level" of income. I'm hoping that my new school, ATC, will help me get a part time job in the industry since I have a higher level of training then a lot of people who go there. (not trying to brag, just simply stating that I was fortunate enough to go to a very good tech school for automotive and we gained a LOT of knowledge of the field)

I feel like I have a crappy job, but then again I am just 21 and almost out of school and still living at home. I make $9.50 working for Wawa, I never go out or anything so all of my money is usually the cars. When I owned the DSM, I had both my cars paid off, and paid for all the engine work. I am good at saving, but if I was on my own in an apartment, I wouldn't be able to enjoy my car hobby like I do. Good luck to you, and all I can say is get into something you have a opportunity to advance in, and maybe something that pays for some schooling if you don't have any. Good luck though.

Except for everything that isnt food and a roof over my head. I work 10-12 hours a day doing anything from landscaping to painting to deck repair and make around say 500/week.

I work for a Real estate co. I started kinda low but have doubled my pay over 6 years. I also own a website and do signs and truck lettering. I also sell equipment on ebay and sometimes do some large scale scrapping. I've scrapped about 20,000 lbs of steel in the last two weeks. Basically anything to make a buck

I work at the Ikea IT Department troubleshooting stuff and doing all the annoying legwork that noone else wants to do.

10 bucks an hour up to 40 hours a week. Before that I worked at Giant and made 6.50 an hour...

Basically I just worked my ass off and saved up 6 grand over 2 years and eventually it paid off and I could buy my RS. I had another car in between but it was cheap, got me around, and basically died at the end. The money I earned plus some money I had in the bank already from just getting christmas money over the years when I was a kid helped me pay for it. I was just smart and saved. If I didn't do that I would be driving a POS car still.

Get in with Pepsi Bottling Group. The warehouse is union and you get paid around 40-50k a year moving product around and loading trucks. Benefits start day one I believe.

Any construction that can be learned on the job will pay you above average while you learn on the job. Landscaping, construction, painting, roofing, etc. You could probably get $16/hr doing roofing starting out.

Sales is easy to get into as well. I don't have the schooling for much...though I'm about 16-19 credits away from an associates in something, lol. But I've got great people skills and enough experience in sales and marketing and customer service.

PS: never have a kid when you can't afford it... if it was a mistake... use a condom till you can afford the mistake
