Canon PowerShot S3 IS?
Anyway after doing some looking I found a nice 'kit' for almost 400 bucks that comes with the Canon PowerShot S3 IS and everything that normally comes with it then, a 2gig card, 3 lense filters, .5x high resolution wide angle lens, 2x high resolution telephoto lens, lens/filter adapter tube, hard case, 52" tripod, table tripod, lens cleaning kit, hi-speed usb reader/writer. I wouldn't say im a beginner photographer, but im also far from being a pro. So would this be a good camera for someone like me? I would love to get a SLR but really can't afford it, or alteast cant find one in my price range of 450ish. Or does anyone have any other suggestions I could look into? |

An SLR gives you the flexibility of changing lenses and and it give you a much faster continuous shutter, meaning how fast you can take shots in rapid succession. Another reason is that sensors on a DSLR are much larger. This means that the image from an 8mp DSRL is going to look much nicer than an image from an 8mp point and shoot. Being able to change lenses allows you use the camera in a much wider variety of situations. You can add wide angles, telephotos, macros, etc, to get the shot you want.
It seems to me though, that you would be better off with a high end point and shoot, or an intermediate camera, like the S3 IS. The Canon is nice because it gives you the manual controls that most P&S's do not. This means you can take much more advanced shots and adjust the camera when necessary. That kit you found sounds like a great setup for someone in your situation. It gives you the medium wide angle and telephoto, as well as a few filters that you can experiment with. Once you find that you are exhausting the resources that the S3 IS has, it might then be time to look into DSLR's. I hope that helps.

i agree with the above post, I started out with a canon g5, it was a great point and shoot with most of the features your talking about. after a few years with it i took the next step and got a canon rebel xt. which i am happy with, but am starting to feel a little limited with it's features. but i'm not planning to make another camera purchase for another year or two.

I just got the previous version of the S3, the S2 a few months ago. Its definately a great step forward from the Fuji, which I also had. I'm still getting used to all of the increased features. I love it though.

you could always pic up a used d50 for cheap. like around 350 most likely. but if you like photography a lot, you wont be dissapointed with a slr.
