sr20det radiator shroud?

so my buddy and i were talking about my first sr20det swap and i was having this problem with over heating. turns out that i was running only my pully fan (NO radiator shroud NO E-fan). i say it was because i didn't have a fan shround. BUt he believes that the radiator shroud does nothing and is only there to avoid any wires or hoses to get caught in the blades of the fan...now correct me if i am wrong but if you have a stock sr20det steup then having a radiator shroud is very important because it create an on going vortex that blows air to your engine to cool it down...

after drifting that car at high rpm and with no radiator shroud...my engine would get very hot and LIKE HARD CORE ON THE "H" type sh*t. i ended up poppin of 2 Rocker arms...go figure..lol......

so what do you guys think? i think the shroud is very important. if you don't have E-fans cuz only having the pulley fan ain't enough.

From what i have been reading over at Zilvia, without the shroud the fan's efficiency is severely cut. They are not much money, and i don't see a reason why not to run one.

The fan shroud is VERY important. Even with an electric fan you need a good shroud to cover more surface area help pull more air through your radiator.

Without your fan shroud your fan is just going to spin and move air around the engine bay but not pull air through the radiator.

Make sure you have a good shroud and it is sealed to the rad. Do not skimp on cooling its what keeps your engine alive. Watch your oil temps. Your oil has alot to do with cooling your motor, maybe even more so than coolant.

lets see before i borrowed mine i had mad overheating problems. nothing major like going down the street to get milk. but spirited runs yea get friendly with mr. h. the clutch fan is useless almost without it. and has he seen the wiring and hoses for sr20 swaps? that shroud wont protect **** since the vac line, maf wires, and cas wires run behind the shroud. if it doesnt do anything then why would nissan put it on the car?

If the only thing you remove from your cooling system is the radiator shroud there will be no major dip or increase in emgine temp.

Look at pictures of JGTC, D1GP, Formula one or even ameture drifters engine bays. More often then not a shroud is not used. A good singe or even dual e-fan application is sufficient. The best thing you can do for cooling is a good water pump that wont crap up at high rpm, and a apply sized aluminum radiator Also vented hoods make a HUGE difference in under hood temps as well as heat wrap etc.

Yes I do agree if your running an e-fan then most come with there own shroud that will sit against the rad, but with the stock pulley fan you need the shroud for everyday driving like for traffic situations where your just sitting there not pushing fresh air into the engine bay.

If your going to run an efan then of course your not going to need the stock clutch fan and shroud. Just make sure the efan pulls enough CFM's and doesn't pull so much amps that it drains your electircal system to where you alternator can't keep up with the fan + all accessories. Make sure you use a temp switch also with a relay to the battery so the fan is not on all of the time. The fan can become a restriction at highway speeds.
