Guitar players
My girlfriend got me a acoustic guitar for x-mass. I don't know how to play and I am learning string by string, note by note? Any tips for a beginner? |

practice! A LOT! lol. If you get the basics down, practice them until you have it all down pat. Dont move ahead of yourself because you'll get all messed up. IMO, its best to start w/ the most simple things. Learn what each string is, and where it is. (i was taught to remember them from a saying: Every Body Gets Drunk At Easter, starting from the high E string, which is the thinnest one on the bottom) Then, look up some scales to practice. Then move on with some simple chords. Wouldn't hurt to pick up one of those books, or a video.

LEARN SCALES!!!!
i hate seeing people who only memorize songs, because it really shows you can memorize things. Learning scales will help you understand music theory and eventually how to "solo" like real guitar players.

ditto! I just never really was all THAT into playing. I've been playing around w/ guitars since I was big enough to hold my dads accoustic, but I was never really like INTO playing.

My GF got me a nice black Epiphone acustic last christmas still haven't had the free time to really learn, just mess around with tabs but I'd say get a book or a video, video would be best since I tried teaching myself but learning proper fingering methods and switching between chords would be easier if you see someone do it...
I'm a Drummer to, much easier to learn drums than guitar..also play trumpet and tuba...

^Slide's really cool, props.
Guitar's one of the most fun, stress-relieving things I've picked up. I'd say it was frustrating for about 2 months, lots and lots of getting used to simple stuff like how you place your fingers and stuff. Strumming up was hard for me, haha. igo4bmx is right, learn some scales, then learn all the basic chords and go from there. Have fun.

Thanks! Slides what I connect with. I was more or less in love with Cream and Dominos era Clapton for about 6 or so years, and then discovered people like Allman, James, Winter, Wood, and so on, and was like hey, the rest is just boring. Im in a band in the Coatesville area (called Gypsy Train at the moment) thats like a rock/jazz/funk/blues fusion that I think sounds pretty cool. We'll see, of course ;)
I'm actually off to jam now. +1 for cars and guitars!

1. Scales (Major, minor, pentatonic)
2. Tone intervals (be able to say that the difference between two notes is a minor 3rd for example) 3. Chord progression (12-bar, 8-bar, I-IV-V, etc) 4. Memorize the fretboard and different positions for the same chords and chord variants I've been playing guitar for 11 years now and I'm finally getting to the point where I can "feel" what to play vs. know what to play. I've been playing mostly blues rock lately.

hahah..guitar hero...that nothing like the real thing...but, i have to say,...it easily train you timing, which is importance in music.
TIP for BEGGINER, ALWAY USE a METRONOME, i can't stress this enough when i teach people they never use a metronome. good guitar player = no metronome PRO guitar player = metronome |
