HELP! tire blown, need all 4?

my friend has an 06 impreza and hit a pot hole and blew his tire. everywhere he goes they are telling him he needs to buy all four tires again or it will ruin the transfer case, is this right?

so everytime you blow a tire you gotta buy 4 new ones?

LMFAO

Whatever your friends are smoking I want some...Thats the most ridiculous statement I've ever heard.

while it isnt suggested to replace just one tire on a car EVER, This includes FWD and RWD as well...If he gets the same tire it will be fine. But normally Tire shops like to replace at least two at a time.

And to answer...No it wont hurt anything.

i've heard that before, but I thought it would affect the tire-wear/handling, not the transfer case...anyways....yes, replacing 1 tire should have little affect on the car. those places don't want him coming back if the tire excessively wears so they don't have to replace it again

it is ideal to replace all of the tires at once, but if his current tires are fairly new then adding one brand new one to the family shouldnt be catastrophic. if the current tires are halfway worn or more then yes i would get all new tires, or have the new one shaved down to match the others but thats kinda silly.

it is ideal to replace all 4 tires unless there will be less than 2 32nd treadwear difference, it says it in your manual if you look. subaru's are very touchy with their tire tread difference and it will/can burn out your transfer case

Thats retarded...The tire shop just wants to make money off of him asking that kind of question, I worked for goodyear Tire salesmen are cuthroat mother ****ers.

As stated if the other three tires are in good condition get the SAME TIRE and youll be ok.

What kind of wear is there on the other 3 tires? If the other three tires are worn down a good amount and he puts on one new tire, he could seriously eff up his drivetrain. If the other three still have low miles and aren't worn down, then he could get away with just replacing one.

I used to work for a Subaru tech department and we used to get WRX's all the time with blown up drivetrains because they put different size tires on the front then what was on the back, or vice versa.

It's not just Subies, it's AWD cars in general.

Yeah man it blows but that is the crap side of AWD. Depending on how many miles are on the other tires he may need to do all four. If it was only FWD or RWD they would only have to replace two of them. Now I don't work at a tire shop but a friend of my family's does own one and he warned me about that when I told him I was looking into getting a Subaru.
