remnants of the Hotfire "meet/cruise" 11/12

So none of the few of us who showed up at the Borders on Sunday heard anything about the meet/cruise being cancelled/moved (nothing on their web site or message boards at all about it, until noon on Sunday ), so we all just chilled for a bit then went our own ways. Kind of disappointing, but still really cool to meet some new people and see some nice cars...and I also saw for the first time in person a set of Ohlins shocks (on the E36 M3...with Ground Control coils), which was cool.

Please do correct me, though, if it was posted somewhere that this cruise was cancelled/postponed (I found some stuff posted round noon and 1, but nothing before).

Anyway, here are some of the pics I took...yeah, they're not the greatest pics...I just didn't really mess with the settings too much

Older Elise with a little surprise under the bonnet:

A couple M3s

The Elise had a Spoon-built Integra Type-R motor, he said it put like 174 or 176hp to the wheels...which is impressive on a car that weighs ~1500lbs (maybe a little less). That is about normal for HP figures on an ITR motor though, I don't think it was built up too much, probably just rebuilt by them. It was LOUD though (one in-line resonator and a resonated exhaust tip...that's it), and honestly didn't sound like an ITR motor at all...until VTEC kicked in.

Yeah, they're 993 Turbo calipers on what I believe he said were Euro M3 floating (2-piece) rotors.

Dont get me wrong it may be impressive in a car like that but 176whp from a "spoon built motor" id rather buy a normal 99 ITR motor and JUN stg3 cam it with I/H/E and some hondata for the money he probably put out for that motor. a total waste i would think for only that little bit of power. The honda "beast" built motor has more power then that and probably cost the same amount.

^ Oh I definitely agree with you on Spoon motors being kind of a rip-off, but he got the car like that. He imported it from Germany with all that done to it already. It does have a custom intake, 4-1 header, then the aforementioned resonator then resonated tip...not sure about what it's tuned with. The entire length of the exhaust after the header is probably 3 feet max.

Swap, you mean the engine or brakes. I believe the Elise was imported with the Honda engine allready installed. Couldn't you buy the older elise's that way?

If you take the time to read about Spoon motors...they aren't built to be nasty street motors with insane N/A power. They are built to be SUPER reliable LONG endurance road-race motors.

There is practically a vertical powerband on them too...no pulsing power.

This is very true, however I was talking about how from purely a horsepower standpoint, you can do better for the money. Also, it's clear that this car isn't the man's daily driver, so a little sacrifice in reliability wouldn't be too huge of a deal. Then again, it's really about where and when the owner wants to spend the money.

We don't know how tight the guy's budget is. If you're looking for a little more power with a ton of reliability and are willing to pay for it, then yeah a Spoon motor would be a very good choice. I don't think this guy's worried about how fast his car is though...I seem to remember him mentioning the thing runs mid-low-12s. I dunno about you all, but a 12-sec car that could tear most other cars apart on a racing track (or autocross course) is pretty enticing to me.

Either way, it's a sick sick car.

That generation of Elise was never officially sold here, and all the ones that have been sold here (the ones we see on the roads) have modified Celica GT-S engines, as I'm sure most ppl know. There were probably some companies every here and there who would import them and sell them with Honda motors, but it was never an official thing. This guy had this one imported from Germany...not sure what (if anything) he upgraded since he got it, but he hasn't done anything to the engine...he's thinking of possibly adding a small turbo at some point though.

Honest_Bob, you want a crazy swap? How about a current Elise with a turbo JDM K20A (Integra Type-R) putting out 400+hp...that's crazy.

if its putting 174 whp that is deff not spoon built. the standard toyota engine puts out like 190bhp (i think). a type R motor has about 190bhp and can easily be at the 190whp level with bolt ons, and if spoon built it it would be revving much higher and making more power that 190whp. unless the guy was just talking out of his ass and meant that he had spoon parts bolted to the motor.

i have read about spoon motors, i was looking into buying one down the line

but the point im making is that the spoon built motor will still have more whp than 190. i know that they build them for reliability but that also will have more power out put than that.

and a stock Honda type R motor is reliable as it is afterall it was made by honda.

The only Spoon motors I've ever known of are just rebalanced and blueprinted using "Spoon" bearings and gaskets. Ooooohhhhhhh. Yes, that makes it so worth the 12k they ask for it.
