Found this 1500 page medical book from 1909 in my attic! Can u help me price it?

Helping my dad around the house and we were up in the attic and I niticed a boarded up eve with newspaper insulation pasted to the boards from 1912! I just had to investigate.

I tore down the false wall to find a single book case with this 1500 page book sitting in teh middle of this hidden room. Straight up Goosebumps shyt.

Anyway, its leather bound, in pretty fair shape for almost 100 years old! I was paging through it and found the Original Recipt for the thing!

The book was bought from a travelling sales man for 10 dollars on April 16th 1910. The recipt details the payment plan for the entire $10 and the signatures of the salesman and the buyer! Edwin F. Walker.

This book is insane! It has treatments for all sorts of things I have never heard of, Milk Leg for instance. Then it goes into detail about how to blood lete the Milked leg and how to stich it back up using skin on a pig for gauze!!!!!

How about a treatment for Drunkards Delirium? It then describes differnt LEAD based medications for treatment!

This is nuts, It has Tissue paper pages that lift to show cross sections in immaculate condition. My jaw drops everytime I crack it up and read another chapter title.

For instance, the life probability for a newborn in 1909 was 50% before the first 5 months of life!

I brought it into work tonight and I've had a butt load of doctors looking at it, they're paging each other to come look at it. This book is nuts.

/NerdyMedicalGeekRant

Now, can someone please help me look up what this thing is worth?

The Household Physician
Published in 1909 by the F.S. Woodruff comp. out of London, England
Leather bound

Thanks a ton!

A quick search states it's worth between $20 and $100. None the less, very cool find!

lmfao i think our hospitals and so forth came along way since 1909, but old things like this are worth tons depending on the condition if you find the right buyer.

If some of you seriuosly want to buy one (and he is going to sell), just do a search. There are plenty for sale, and as stated, they sell for between $20 and $100 (depending on condition).

I was gonna call BS when you listed the price until I saw the pic because $10 for a book in 1909 was like paying $500 for a medical book today. Hey maybe you'll luck out yet and find a Honus Wagner T-206 baseball card in there that someone used as a bookmark.

Actually $10 in 1909 is $205.30 in 2006 money.

The back of the receipt has a add for the entire library. It says

"A complete manikin, 768 slides, illustrations, photographs, and monotone drawings, and 70 text books for a value of $20,000"

Then the reciept is ripped. I have to scan this **** tomorrow and post it. This is insane.

Holy Shyt!

I read it wrong.

This is a receipt for a single month payment for the book!

A single payment was worth over $200 of todays money!

Ill be scanning this tonight.

The house was built in 1890. Not sure why the bookcase was sealed off in the eve.

It was just sitting there on the bookcase in the middle of the room.

I went home and showed my dad the receipt and he said the owners of the house before us were also named Walker.
