I tried linking two xbox's together today with a ethernet cable with no luck. Is my xbox just too old or do I have to drop the $20 for a Microsoft Xbox link cable?

My brother insisted that I could use a ethernet cable.

Come on LAN partyers. Chime in!

I tried reading thorugh all my game books and the xbox manual but couldnt find anything that actually said that.

never tried it but, if you have an old router laying around, you can probably plug the 2 consoles into that. if not, then you probably need a link cable.

it works the same way as 2 pc's on your home network. you cant just ethernet 2 of the together, you need a router or a special cable that lets you connect them directly.

a regular cat 5 wont work, you need a crossover cable. Or you can use a hub/switch and two cables.

Or buy a SWITCH!!

You don't need the IP routing...the X-BOX does it all for you.

Without a LAN hub... you need the Xbox cable. If you have an ethernet LAN hub you can use ethernet cables.

Thanks guys, ran to Wal-mart lastnight and couldnt find a xbox cable. I guess an employee saw the panic in my eyes, he went in back and came back with a dust covered xbox link cable.

Ya, it's $50 a year for unlimited full access. And you can still play against people with an X360. Halo FTW
