neighbor caught a baby....

He's waiting on a friend to come pick it up to take to a wildlife sanctuary

I got a chance to hold AND pet this baby Peregrine falcon. Absolutly one of the most amazing things I've seen in my life.

same bird. Mommy is no where to be found. HE found the baby hopping around the work sight. I assume his first flight didn't go so well and he landed in a place where the guy thought the bird would not be safe.

Nor did he see parents, or hear them. Birds are funny about their babies, they will attack someone messing with a fledgling...I had robins dive bombing me a couple summers ago because I put a baby that was in our front yard(saving it from our dog) to the back yard.

It is a really cool bird. I got a chance to hold it w/ the gloves and pet its chest, while keeping a careful eye on that flesh tearing beak.

I've got more pictures, but my digi cam decided to focus on the background.

What sanctuary is he going off to?

Holy ish i stand corrected. 180mph!!! Those babies flat move when they are hungry. How can something of such a small mass reach such a high velocity in such a short time frame?

Damn man that is awesome, and really cool of your friend to go that extra mile to keep it safe. Is anyone else thinking of that commercial where the hawk goes after the beer? Lol

they start up high, aim at their target and dive, folding their wings in and basically becoming a bullet

At the Sterling, NY RenFaire they have a lady who does falconry and she has a white owl- not sure what type- and a peregrine falcon. The birds are smart as hell and do bombing runs, snatching food and such from her outstretched hand. Very cool stuff.

it makes me want to get a falconry license. I believe that is where this one is going though, to someone with a license to own and train these birds. They're out in the poconos, so it should do quite well out there.

The temptation to keep such a bird is strong, I know I'd have to fight it...but in the end, any normal owner could not do justice to the bird by locking it up in a cage, nor could we train it. Luckily this little guy is going to a good home.

I talked to the lady at the renfaire about it and she said that it takes A LOT of training. She was talking about having to stay up with the bird for so many hours on end and stuff. I dunno, that was two years ago so I forgot a lot of what she told me. Sounded pretty complex to me though.

Her falconry costume was smoking hot too so that might have had something to do with it...
