I am an Engineer for the state of NJ. I received this e-mail today at 11:00 AM!

June 29, 2006

Dear DOT Employee:

If a state budget is not approved by the start of the new fiscal year on Saturday, July 1, 2006 Governor Corzine has indicated that most state operations will stop and only essential operations will continue. Previous designations as “essential” do not apply and only a limited number of DOT employees will be deemed essential should a State government shutdown become necessary.

These essential employees will receive a separate letter later this week. If you do not receive this letter, then for this purpose, you are not considered essential and you are not to report to work, unless otherwise instructed by management.

I approve working bridge drawings for the state. I have yet to get a letter saying that I am an essential employee. Reguardless, as of monday I no longer have a job until further notice!!!!!

Maybe they are waiting until last minute to keep the suspense up? That is going to blow huge chunks if you get laid off, sorry to hear.

I wont get laid off permanently, but they cant give a timeline of how long.

I don't think he will cause he techinally has a job he just can't be paid cause there is no budget.

A lot of larger companies that don't have work for people just lay them off while giving them unemployment. It's easier on the books and also easier to bring them back once work picks up again. If a whole slew of people get fired, then they have to re-hire a new staff, tons more paperwork and I9's, W4's, etc. etc.
