Roethlisberger Injured In Motorcycle Crash

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was injured in a motorcycle crash Monday morning and taken to a hospital.

"He was alert and conscious," said Ernie Roman, shift commander for the Allegheny County emergency service.

Steelers Dave Lockett, outside Mercy Hospital, confirmed the accident but did not provide additional details.

In only his second year in the NFL, Roethlisberger helped guide the Steelers to the Super Bowl championship last season.

Calls to Roethlisberger's agent, Leigh Steinberg, were not immediately returned.

The 24-year-old Roethlisberger has said in the past that he prefers not to wear a helmet when riding his motorcycle. He has pointed out Pennsylvania's 35-year-old state law requiring helmets to be worn was amended to make helmets optional.

In May 2005, Steelers coach Bill Cowher lectured Roethlisberger on the dangers of riding without a helmet.

"He talked about being a risk-taker and I'm not really a risk-taker. I'm pretty conservative and laid back, but the big thing is to just be careful," Roethlisberger said at the time. "I'll just continue to be careful. I told him we don't ever ride alone, we always ride in a group of people, and I think it makes it even more safe."

PITTSBURGH (Ticker) - Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is undergoing surgery at Mercy Hospital after he was injured in a motorcycle accident on Monday.

The extent of his injuries are unknown.

"Ben is in serious but stable condition and right now is in the operating room undergoing surgery for injuries he received in this accident," said Dr. Larry Jones, chief of trauma at Mercy. "Before he went into the surgery, he was talking to me and was coherent. He knew where he was and what had happened."

Roethlisberger was injured when his motorcycle crashed into a car at an intersection in downtown Pittsburgh. The accident occurred at the Second Avenue side of the 10th Street Bridge near the Armstrong Tunnel.

An eyewitness told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that Roethlisberger flew into the windshield of the car and hit the ground after his motorcycle crashed into the car. He was bleeding from a gash on his forehead before being taken to the hospital.

Roethlisberger has been known to refuse to wear a helmet when riding his motorcycle.

According to the eyewitness account in the newspaper, Roethlisberger was headed outbound on Second Avenue and a car was coming inbound when it made a left turn toward the bridge in front of the motorcycle.

Steelers president Art Rooney issued the following statement:

"On behalf of everyone within the Steelers organization, I want to express my concern for Ben Roethlisberger. I am sure Ben knows that we are praying for his complete recovery. So far, we have been encouraged by the early reports from the medical team at Mercy Hospital."

At 23 years of age, Roethlisberger became the youngest quarterback to win a Super Bowl last February. He completed just 9-of-21 passes for 123 yards and was intercepted twice, but rushed for a touchdown in the Steelers' 21-10 win over Seattle in Super Bowl XL.

The 11th overall pick in the 2004 draft, Roethlisberger owns a 27-4 record, including 5-1 in the playoffs, as a starter. He is the first quarterback in the modern era to start a conference championship game in each of his first two NFL seasons.

i wouldnt feel bad for him even if he was seriously seriously injured. you are a professional quarterback in the NFL and you go around risking your life and your career by riding your damn motorcycle without a helmet. i dont feel bad for him at all.

Yep, broken jaw and he's missing teeth. I want to see his team photo for 2006.

Seriously, that sucks though. I would never ride a bike without a helmet.

Thats not nice. C'mon, he is a decent player and he is still really young. He's going to be awesome as he develops.

However, I hope he doesn't play well when he plays the Eagles.

i just think he deserves to watch the game he loves for the rest of his life because he did something completely stupid. i mean first of all riding a busa during the offseason after just winning the super bowl and risking the rest of your life if as well as your career is just mind boggling to me. on top of that he decided he was gonna be cool and not wear a helmet. i just dont feel any sort of sorrow for a person with so much talent and so much to look forward to when they decide to be a jackass and risk it all. he's lucky hes not dead.

Agreed, but you can't blame the guy for riding a bike. You can blame him for not wearing a helmet.

I totally agree. He would've been in much better shape had he been wearing a helmet.

with the risk involved when riding a bike i think it was a poor decision to do so. i jus think he jeopardized himself way too much by making that decision to ride, specially without a helmet.

Yeah, real nice man.......nice. I wouldnt even say that about any of the Eagles players.....and some of you know how bad i despise and loath that team. Did i cheer everytime i saw McNabb bend over in pain from his sports hernia, of course.....but injuries on the field are more times than not non-life threatening. An athlete that shows up in an emergency room, in a bloody pile in serious condition is no laughing matter. I do agree that he should of worn a helmet though. As a die-hard steelers fan, i feel a little let down by this, but to wish any athlete to never be able to play a sport again is both heartless and idiotic.

It might of not been the brightest decision and we all know that. Even if you are safe doesn't mean the other people around you are. This is just like the situation with Kellen Winslow a couple years ago when he became a part of the Browns. He didn't end up doing jack for most of the season and I think the team even wanted to take away most of his salary. There has been incidents like this with sports players before.

Hope he gets better, and I would love to buy his busa engine for my tube frame mini project.

Wish I had his # (in a non **** way).

I'm not that worried with Batch at QB for a couple of games. Hopefully he learns that Busas (and most crotch rockets) are only ridden by people who haven't died yet.

first of all you dont know me. dont you ever call me heartless or idiotic again. i was simply voicing my opinion. i would never wish pain or heartbreak on anyone but he made a stupid decision and he should be punished for it. not playing another game would be a constant reminder to him and a wake up call for all other players about how quickly your fame and fortune can be taken from you. so let me say again, dont ever call me heartless or idiotic cause you have no clue who i am. thanks

It doesnt matter if "i know you" or if "i have no clue who you are", to hope that he never plays again is wrong, and therefore i feel its being heartless and idiotic (just my opinion). Im sure that he has learned his lesson from this incident, and im sure he will never be helmetless again. There is no need for hoping that his career is over.
