If coolant made it to the oil and he drove the car then he will most likely need a rebuild shortly after. But have the head looked at before it goes back on for hairline cracks between the jets. I would hate to spend the money on gaskets and bolts then find out it didnt fix the problem, just to turn around and buy the same ish again! By the way make sure he uses Felpro gaskets.
The parts should run about $200.

Unless he did not drain the oil and it pitted the bearings I do not see it having a problem. Or if it blew really bad and filled the cylinders up and hydrolocked the motor then he has an issue. Have the head checked to make sure it is not warped. Also I would use a stock honda head gasket. I don't use after market gaskets or bearning on my motors.

Coolant has a nasty tendency to eat up bearings even while mixed with oil. And something else that needs to be considered is why did the motor blow a headgasket anyway???
Best case scenario is the motor was turbo-charged, over-boosted, which subsequently lifted the head and all it needs is a new gasket. I don't even know if this motor was turbo-charged. Typically what happens is the motor was driven with a stuck thermostat or low coolant due to an external leak and the motor overheated which warped the head and blew the gasket. In this case it is absolutely necessary to deck the head flat and check the block for straightness. It is also very possible the motor had a blown headgaseket for a while and was mixing coolant for a while which would mean it is probably cheaper and easier in the long run to swap out the motor. Ultimately, it is hard to say what is going on till the motor is cracked open and checked out so any quote to fix the problem is worthless till the work is started.

Dam if I had a dollar for every time I heard that in the last week I would be rich as hell. My new motor for my race car is leaking coolant in with the oil and I can not find where it is coming from. Changed out the head gasket and still doing it. It is a very small leak and only does it while under boost. Did a leak down test and pressurized the system and all seems good. So I am still searching for the dam leak. If people did not keep telling me that I am going to f up my bearings I would race it at NHRA spring nationals in may but looks like I will have to keep searching for the leak.

That is why a shop quoted you what appears to be soo much money. If they diagnosed it as a head gasket and went to replace it; and it turned out to be something else, or they experienced lots of problems they need a way to re-coop some of their money.
If you just went ahead and replaced the head gasket it would cost you a couple hundred dollars in labor and/or ~ a days worth of labor. If you go that route and your motor has probelms again, you will probably regret not taking the extra time now to figure what your whole probelm is. |
