Rotary journey

I've only creep on this site but decide to copy and paste my build thread from the other forum to here.

It all started with a craigslist post from NJ with a guy selling an 88T2 for $1000 with 95k on the engine and body. It didn't run due to some flooding issue he was trying to fix but never got to it. It was sitting in his mother's garage for 3yrs. So I called him, even though I didn't have any money, due to fact that I spend $600 on a POS NA RX7 that didn't run and I was planning to do the T2 swap on it. So we started talking and after 20mins or so and I wasn't going anywhere with the conversation, I got desperate and asked "Are you willing to trade?" he said "Sure what you got?" I said "I don't know why I even asked that, because I have nothing to trade. All I have is an xbox 360 with a few games and a steering wheel" he said "Ok I guess is better then nothing" I was shocked! I asked again, "You are willing to trade the RX for my xbox?" He said yea and told me that if he doesn't get rid of it by the end of the week his mother was going to take it to the junk yard. So he wanted to get at least something out of the deal. So I came home this this. It sat for about a year before I did anything to it, I was just happy that I got a Turbo2!

All the engine pieces was in the trunk.

Instead of trying to fix this engine I just bought a JDM engine and had it put in, also around this time I got Apexi muffler and 89-92 taillights.

Then I took it to the track, first time ever doing a 1/4 and guess what I raced against?

Look at me, like a little kid in x-mas morning

It was a great day. Also got to see this that day.

A few months passed and I got an stock ecu with an Rtek chip now I can tune.
I can't find the picture but I got 224whp

After the dyno I got the bad news :awman:

Around this time I bought a house with a 2 garage and was able to get some work done.

First shot of the inside

The housing where still good but wanted something in better shape.

Clean Rotors

Now it's time for some port and polish. Don't sweat my knots making skillz.

Before (secondary side housing)

After (secondary side housing)

These are the primary side house just an idea of the size differences in porting

Don't have a before picture of the exhaust port, but it's a big differences.

I bought some excellent condition housing and had them powder coated.

Bridge porting was a little to advance for me to do.
This is a great example of a Bridge port, this is what give the car the Brap,Brap idle. It also gives you higher rpm and make your turbo respond faster.

I took the side housing to my rotary guy and said that I should go with this type of Bridge port just because it would be more reliable but lose about 5whp. The thing is sometime the bridge can break an once that happen, good bye to your engine. So I took the safe way and this is how they look like.

The rebuild kit, paid extra for the heat treated super seals and the 6 puck sprung act clutch

Now lets put everything together

This was a pain in the ass

Finally in

I took the car to my rotary guy to make sure I did everything right and had him install my front mount inter cooler. I took it home and was enjoying my new idle.

A short time after that, I bought some used Koni with RSR spring, front fender, some wheels and bigger secondary injectors. And back the dyno and get tune. Notice how they engine doesn't blow smoke on WOT like on the old engine. My mechanic said I build a solid engine and did a great job on it. Was happy to hear that.

Now for good times.

It's track time again.

Best I ever got was 13.4

First ever AutoX this is a lot harder without power steering..lol
[YT]8VyXMgi7fV8[/YT]

I went to the 1/4 track a few time after that, and the last time I went which was sometime in Sept or Nov something came loose and couldn't boost pass 5psi.

Last year I wasn't out at all my wife gave birth to twins (boy and a girl) so didn't have free time at all between work and a new family.

So this winter I got 4 1000cc injector, fuel pressure regulator and some SS fuel line and installed them. At the end of this month this turbo is getting installed and tuned
T04e 60 trim with 1.15a/r hotside.

Turbos on a rotary acts differently then on a piston. Example a GT35R turbo would be at full boost around 2700rpm and only give you about 375whp.
Can't wait for April I'm hoping to get 350whp with this setup. The only thing that's holding me back is my ecu, 1000cc injectors is the max it can handle. Other then that my turbo is good for 380whp.

To be continued.

I got the wheels powder and installed some ground control for the koni. This is how it looks like now.

If I get the 350whp, I'm going to focus on the interior and exterior. Need to make it prettier.

It's time for a little update on my end. Well got some good news and bad news. The turbo (T04E) that I got a few years ago was a POS, I got ripped off. ($300) Got everything installed, manifold, injectors ect. and the turbo started to leak oil right away. When I got the turbo it was supposed to be a freshly rebuild turbo, and it was. The problem was it was an ebay knock off turbo that got rebuild with garrett internal. After calling around for turbo rebuild service, I found out that it's never going to seal because it's a Chinese knock off and poor manufacturing. So what's left to do? Get a real turbo.

I wanted to get a T04R (aka T67) great turbo for the rotary. But for me to run this turbo,I needed to upgrade my ecu and injectors.
Out with the old

In with the new

Just when I was going to buy the T04R with a 1.15ar I asked the rotary performance shop if there's another turbo for the about the same price and that would be better then the t04R. He said yea and it's cheaper.

So I got this bad boy.
bw s366 with ett

extended tip technology (ETT)

Compare to the T04E

Test fit. Like a glove.

I should see full boost by 3500rpm since I have a half bridge port and will pull hard till 8500rpm. And 450+whp@18psi. But I'm going to stay at 16 or 17psi. 18psi is really pushing with my stock studs.

My injectors will come tomorrow I'll post them then. In the mean time enjoy some of this beautiful sound. (same turbo)

So finally had to some time to work on the car today. Started to working on the standalone harness today.

The carboard cut out is the template for the mounting plate that I'm going to installed where the old ecu was. I made sure that I have space for another relay for an e-fan for sometime in the future. The fuse block just made it in, once I bolt it to the mounting plate everthing should be nice and neat.

This is where is going to get mounted

And laid out some wires

Little update, pretty much done with the engine harness. All that's left is the red and blue wires where are for the injectors. The rest of the harness that you see is the CAS, tps, air and water temp. The only one you don't see is the my ign coil terminal which it's already connected on the other side of engine bay. I might change the shrink tubing that's between the water and air temp and replace it with the asphalt loom. But I might not since you won't be able to see after I install the intake manifold.

I'm waiting for this to finish my injector harness. If I ever need to change injectors it would be easy.

Today I did my throttle body mod.
The purpose of this mod is to, remove coolant flowing through the throttle body and keep intake charge as cool as possible. Also removing double-throttle plates to increase air flow through the throttle body, especially at high RPM's.

Before

After

Finished my injectors harness a few days ago. Glad I decided to make this harness this way, didn't have to solder in the engine bay. 550cc injectors for primary(red) and 2200cc for secondary. 5500cc total

Some insight of this setup. 550cc is the stock injectors which I didn't want to upgrade, because I wanted some fuel economy. Since the 2ndary don't kick in until somewhere in the 3,300rpm range(I'll let my tuner decide when) I wanted some injectors where I can cruise around and not kill me in gas $.

Finished the engine harness and started to put everything together. Still got to bolt most of the stuff down and clamp up the downpipe, also got to finished the interior wires.

Got the timing pretty much on. Can hear the BP idle now. Still need to lower the idle speed.

and got an E-fan today from the junk yard.

So my car is going to get tuned on the 16th. Hoping to get around 400-450whp at 15-16psi. So today I installed the efan. Now I can finally fit a filter on the turbo. The filter that you see on there is temporary.

shift light installed, getting everything ready for this sat tuning session. All is left draining the gas and adding fresh 93, install upper manifold gasket and fenders.

So before I took my car to the tuner, I knew I had a vacuum leak somewhere but I just couldn't find it. I had the high idle which I couldn't adjust for anything. I knew the tuner could find it and he did. It was the lower intake manifold paper gasket. It blew out when I tried to start the car while it was out of timing and when it back fire blew out the gasket. He told me it's a common thing when cars are not timed and back fires. The bad thing he didn't have one in stock, so we couldn't tune it. So I left the car there, he's ordering one on monday and install it on tuesday and tune it. I'll be picking it up on wed evening. I guess I'm going not going to have a video of the dyno run but will have the print out. I just didn't want to go down there on tuesday and he finds out something else wrong while he's tuning it and have to leave my car there again. The place is 1 1/2hr away

Well bad news, after my tuner fix everything and had it on the dyno, he was doing soft pull to check when the 2ndary injectors kicked (pull #2) he went back to the engine bay to check everything and he notice a pool of oil on the floor. A small $5 oil o-ring busted. So now I have to take the engine out and remove the rear plate and install a new o-ring. here's a picture where's it's located. Also pictures of how to take the rear plate off with out making the rest of the engine shift. So starting tomorrow I'm going to start prepping the car for engine removal.
