Police Looking for Shooting Suspect in Warwick: US Army Captain "armed & dangergous"

Anyone else hear about this last night in the midst of the storm? I was finally able to find a news article on it this morning. The news is still busy reporting on the Hurricane but I thought this was pretty crazy news:

http://www.phillyburbs.com/news/loca...cdf6f0a54.html

Quote:
Updated: As of 2 p.m., the suspect remains at large. Police remind residents to keep their homes and vehicles locked and if they see the suspect or suspicious activity call 911 immediately. Warwick Police Chief Mark Goldberg said reports another person was shot in connection with the case Sunday afternoon are unfounded. Police are continuing their search as the rain and wind go on.
A manhunt remains underway in Warwick as police look for a U.S. Army captain sought in connection with four murders, the shooting of one police officer and the wounding of a second.
Police are warning residents to lock their doors and cars and stay inside as they search for Leonard John Egland, 37, of Fort Lee, Va., who they said is armed and dangerous. Egland has at least two firearms, including an assault rifle, and may be looking for a vehicle to steal. He is believed to have recently returned from a third tour of duty, having served in both Afghanistan and Iraq.
The search has been concentrated for several hours in the area of York Road in Warwick. Many officers have been searching for Egland through the remnants of Hurricane Irene as high winds and rain battered Bucks county. Dispatchers are receiving 911 calls reporting possible sightings from surrounding areas as well.
District Attorney David Heckler said Egland is sought by Virginia authorities as a person of interest in the shooting deaths of his 36-year-old ex-wife, her boyfriend and her boyfriend's 10-year-old son. Sources said they may have been killed Saturday.
Authorities believe Egland drove north with his young daughter to 3491 Church School Road in Buckingham, where he shot and killed his ex-wife's mother, Barbara Ruehl, 66, as she sat in her chair, police said.
Shortly before midnight, Eglund brought his daughter into St. Luke's Hospital in Quakertown and told medical personnel to check her out. Heckler said authorities do not believe she was injured. Eglund left a note, believed to have been a suicide note, but as he left the hospital an orderly confronted him about dumping a child at the hospital and Eglund pulled a gun before leaving in a black Dodge pickup with a Virginia license plate.
The girl said, "Grandma is in heaven now."
State police spotted the car a short time later and a pursuit began through Upper Bucks on Route 313. It ended near Route 202 and Route 611 in Doylestown Township, where Egland was pulled over about midnight by state police, a Dublin police officer and a Doylestown Borough police officer. However, instead of surrendering, Egland opened fire, striking Doylestown Officer Ed Hilton and wounding Dublin Officer William Kirk when shattered glass got in his eye after a bullet struck a car window, police said. Both Hilton and Kirk were able to drive themselves to the hospital.
Egland was last seen driving southbound on Route 611, police said.
Egland's pickup was later spotted at a pizza shop near the intersection of Almshouse and York Roads in Warwick. Police and SWAT officers flooded the area and shots were exchanged before Egland escaped on foot. Police have been searching wooded areas and neighborhoods along York and Old York roads, attempting to track Egland down.
Police stressed that anyone with information should call 911 immediately, and police are asking residents to report any suspicious activity.
Investigators remain on scene at Ruehl's home in Buckingham as well. Heckler said county detectives are concentrating on the homicide investigation while police from several departments are concentrating on the search for Egland.
Records indicated Barbara Ruehl's husband of 43 years, Victor, died last year. Among the survivors listed in his obituary are a daughter Carrie Eglund and son-in-law Leonard.
Another relative is being guarded by police, out of concern he may also be a target.
Officials said it appears Egland does not want certain people involved in raising his daughter.
The newspaper was unsuccessful in reaching Fort Lee officials Sunday morning.

Just heard about it a few hours ago. Know a lot of people from around the area so it's pretty scary. As of rite now they supposedly have the guy barricaded in Hatboro on york road. He has 3 hostages and there is Swat on scene.

We heard something about it last night, but couldn't find any news on it due to the storm.

Heard bits and pieces from Facebook. Quite nerve racking. It's a shame they haven't reported on this as much as they should

oh hey. this happened 2.5 miles from my house. search was going on all morning, heard police helicopters flying all over the place and saw SWAT teams were going through people's backyards looking for the guy. SWAT gave up the search because they lost him around 3:15 and reported they didnt know where he was on the news. around 3:30 my bf and i were following my sister home to make sure she got there safe. turns out the same time we were driving down Guinea Lane/Almshouse Rd and York rd is the same time the armed murderer killed himself behind buildings at the corner of Almshouse and York roads. a little freaky if you ask me.

quite the eventful past few days with weather and this crap. I complained about the lack of news coverage. half the people in my area probably had no idea it was going on or how much danger they may have been in.

I'm upset that I didn't see him and get to do it myself... Moron. Good Riddance. I know he was Military and served his country and all that But I think his actions of the previous 72 hours totally erased all that and he shouldn't be given a military funeral, etc... When it's hits this close to home, to threatren my gf and her family, I just get crazy about **** like this... But I agree with Michelle, to be no more than a half mile away when dude offed himself was a little bit strange.

I feel for all the remaining people in his family/ex-family that have to now go on living their lives without 4 members, including an innocent child, because this guy went nuts.

Honestly Saying good riddance is something i can't agree with PTSD is a serious thing and can ruin someone's life, it's sad that things like this happen but I've seen people completely changed from what they've seen and some just snap.

I'm actually glad he killed himself, just for the fact that the guy obviously had some skills when it comes to killing and hiding.

He kills 3 people, then gets in a gun fight with 3 cops where he wounds two and gets away. Then, he gets into another gun fight, this time with a SWAT team before again escaping on foot unscathed. Who is this guy, Rambo?

3 combat tours, Army Captain? I'll tell you one thing, I'm glad I was not one of the beat cops tasked with going after this guy.

That's some scary chit right there.

PTSD is serious, but this could have been prevented if he embraced help from the proper outlets. If the police/SWAT did catch him alive, the guy wouldn't have been put on trial or reprimanded for his actions as a civilian or as a murderer. he would have been committed for his PTSD and released when they felt it was appropriate based on his behavior. when it all comes down to it, no matter how terrible it sounds, the guy killed 4 people, wounded others, and put the lives of hundreds+ in danger. I'm glad he's dead.
