Rust patching.

What do you guys use to repair rust? I have about a fistsize hole of rust on my rocker panel, It's through to the frame. Rather than cutting it out and welding in a whole new quarter, I would rather just cut out the rust and patch it up. Anyone have experience doing this or can reccommend what they used and how good it held up? Thanks

well depending on your vehicle they sometimes make rust patch panels that you weld in they usually are the whole wheel well are, if not cut out your rust apply rust inhibitor to the surrounding area, make yourself a custom patch out of sheet metal thats close to the original shape (make it a little bigger, either borrow or buy a step down tool to create a lip) drill 8mm holes in the existing quarter, clamp your patch in place, make your spot welds, add a little filler, do some sanding and whalla, rust fixed! just make sure everything gets paint or rust converter on it so it doesnt come back, it probably still will eventually but the more you protect the longer it lasts. hope that helps =] thats what i would do at work

Any experienced body shop or resto shop can take care of this and it probably wont be as expensive as you think. I was speaking with LIP collision who is a vendor on here about doing something similar to one of my project cars and they were very helpful. I haven't had it done yet because I'm finishing up a very other projects on the car first.

I imagine it being very pricey, I had bad rust on my old honda a few years ago and the body shop told me it would be a few hundred BEFORE paint, and that rust, from what i remember, wasn't nearly as bad

There is no "easy fix" to this. You HAVE to cut out the rust and weld in a new panel.

Stuffing newspaper and bondo into the hole to fix the rust does not fix the problem, it just makes it much more complicated to fix later.

^I know later down the line it will not be any easier to fix but who knows how long I will have the car and have already dumped countless dollars into it already, now just looking for a quick fix that isn't costly. Trust me, my first thought was to just get a whole new quarter/rocker panel welded in there

cut out and make a panel works if the location allows it, other wise its a matter of cutting out the 1/4 and welding another in. frame rails sometimes can be replaced in the same matter, other wise they will have to have either have a new frame rail made and welded in or the old frame rail cut out something sturdy made up then in. there is no rel easy / ghetto cheap fix to this. but it doesn't always mean that the car has to be deemed for the junk yard. GL w your project.

Why don't you just go to the junkyard with a sawzall and cut out what you need. Mock up a piece of cardboard to the size you want and then shape the piece you cut out from the yard and then tack weld it into place.

I'm telling you, there is no quick fix that isn't costly. The quick fix you're looking for will cost you more in the end that just doing it right.

Had a friend a couple of years ago who bought a CRX that was badly rusted through. He used wired screen to put the bondo on around the holes. I kept telling him he needed to just do it right, he didn't listen. At first, it came out looking nice and he gave me the good ole' "told you so" routine.

That winter, the bondoed holes deformed and every single one of them cracked, two of which created big holes again. Also, he got rust on the outside of the bondo patches because he didn't remove the rust, he just fixed the hole.

It cost him 2x as much as it would have originally to get the rust repaired, because not only did the rust grow, but the bodyshop had to remove all of the bondo and crap from the inside of the panels in order to get clean welds.

If it really is a problem and you don't have the money to now, go to eastwood.com and get some rust converter/inhibitor. Chip out as much rust as you can and spray the rest with that until you can get the money together to have the job done right.

I have a friend who said if i can get him the whole 1/4/rocker panel, Hell weld it in for me sand it all and leave it primed but I need to find a quarter, but they are impossible to find at junkyards and the only places I can find them online are lottt of money, to much to spend on the car, not even worth it.

So scrap the car, buy a new shell, and delete this thread.

you could always take it my shop and i'll weld in a patch (sheet metal) then smooth it out and paint it and it will look like nothing ever was wrong.

Eh, not as much as completely scrapping the car and re-doing what I did to my current one just because of one small spot of rust
