meditation on the speed limit

http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...745475&q=speed

I'm not even going to post an opinion, but I thought the bridge view at the end was crazy.

55 mph

It's so true. Some speed limits are just retarded.

I absolutely love it. That video is amazing. We should do something like that with I-95. "There's a bunch of assholes in really loud Subarus and Mitsubishis and Neons going so slow on 95!"

you are not allowed to break the speed limit to pass someone. So, if they are going 55, it would be considered illegal to pass them. The left lane is for passing if the person in the right lane is going under the speed limit.

That was the point of the whole thing.

I disagree. The people F-ed up their own day because they didnt plan their driving time to reflect the posted speed limit.

The bottom line is, you can't get mad at someone for following the speed limit. This was a form of protest. They werent trying to be jerks, they were protesting the rediculous speed limits in that area by staging a non-violent demonstration.

So if a person having a heart attack died in an ambulance on the way to the hospital because they had traffic backed up for miles it's the ambulances fault?
If someones house had burned down because fire trucks were blocked in by there stupid traffic prank it's the fire fighters fault?
If someone got shot during a robbery because the cops couldn't make it some where fast enough because of there stupid stunt it's the cops fault?
I have had to drive someone with a mild stroke, and someone who had cuaght there hand in a fan belt to the hospital in my own personal vehicle on seperate occasions.
I did not have the benifit of having lights nor siren.
Just because a person isn't in a marked vehicle DOES NOT MEAN THEY DON"T HAVE A LEGITIMATE RIGHT TO SPEED.
What they did is just plain stupid.
It's a fact that people respond differently under pressure, some people panic, some people get stupid.
Just like the van that clipped the car on the side of the road, if someone had been out of their car jacking it up to change a tire and was ran over and killed because they wanted to prove a 55 limit is stupid would it have been worth it then?
Hey I have an idea, if they all drive slow to prove slow speed limits are stupid, lets get like 20 cars to do 120+mph bazzai runs down the turnpike to prove it can be done safely!

I see the point.

I say these people need to get a second (or maybe first) jobe, because they seem to have too much time on their hands!

Well im sure that if those people did see any emergency vehicle with there lights and sirens then they would have moved out of the way.

That would have been 100% the van drivers fault. The 4 drivers were doing nothing illegal. The van was not only speeding, but also driving on the shoulder. He was breaking the law on two accounts.

There's a differance between legally and morally.

Did you see how far they had traffic backed up?
As little as a mile away they wouldn't have a clue that people needed to get through, wouldn't have heard lights or siren.
Just a bunch of idiots in 5 or six cars with no concern what so ever for other people.
One of the points on the video paraphrased.
"If everyone is going 75 MPH and your going 80 you get nailled for a ticket for like 25 over when your only going 5 mph more then everyone else."

Okay genius, lets say you move the speed limit to 75 mph.
Speed is like a fast car, once youve had it awhile you get used to it and its not fast anymore so now when people getr adjusted they are driving 95 MPH the people driving 100mph are getting the tickets for 25mph over when they are only doing 5 mph more then everyone else.
Where do you draw the line?

Do people even consider that the reason alot of the interstate/big road speed limits are low is that there are a ton of cars out there that.
1. Have trouble going 80mph+
2. Merging traffic for slower cars onto a road with higher speed limits (therefore faster actual traffic) would be much more dangerous.
3. There are alot of non performance cars out there that have crappy brakes, bad susspensions, don't handle well.

I am all for much faster speed limits, but it means being 10x more hard on inspections.
Making sure cars are capable of doing them safely.
Getting all the deathtraps off the road.
And re-educating people about cars.
I had a guy come in with a chunk of sidewall missing out of his tire.
He wanted to fill it with black RTV.
That was a safe repair to him, and people like him drive next to you in traffic every day and you don't even know it.
