How reliable are high end cameras?

I can get a good deal on a Nikon SLR camera, and I was just wondering how reliable these high end cameras are? I can't imagine one being unreliable, but if I took care of it, and kept up with any maintenance, can I except to have it for the next 5 years? I mainly want it to take to Phillies games for some super closeups of the players. I am a complete noob to this, so what are some nice models and what kind of lens will I need to get closeups of the players from the 200 level at the stadium? (Doesn't have to be Nikon)

I have a D70 from several years ago. I still use it along side my D300 and for marine photography that requires a underwater housing. Last time I checked (over a year ago) it had like 75000 shutter clicks.

Only problem I have with it is its LCD is starting to be iffy but I can't see anything on that screen anyway so I don't care. the camera is a beast and you are deffinately getting your monies worth

if your shooting a day game I would suggest a normal 70-300 lens nikkor makes a decent one with VR if you shoot night time you will need better glass.

The cannon t2i is one of the best sub professional dslrs out right now..best camera you can buy for under 2k$. Retails around 900$ and with tha you get 1080p video, a nice lense, and 18 megapixles. Of course there's lesser options but the cheapest your going to find is 480-500$. As with anything if you take care of it it will last you some time. Also if your going to be using it for phillies games invest in a 300mm lense. Hope this helps you.

pretty much any body will last you a long time, the only thing is from the 200 level you are going to need a super long lens, so that might not work for you

Like mentioned most DSLR bodies are all built with the same durability, the main difference in durability is Metal bodies over Plastic. A metal body will out last a plastic body put under the same conditions. Metal bodies are on the higher end, more expensive bodies (at least for canon). The T2i is a entry level DSLR, It's a great camera, and can be picked up used for about $550 on adorama right now, with a grip. If you had more cash the 50D Less Cash the Rebel XT.

As for the lens length, a lens converter is the cheapest way to get length. A 200mm can become a 400mm for about $150-$200 (used).

I would look into purchasing a fancy point and shoot that comes with a 10x zoom lens... That sounds like it would be a much better solution than an SLR, which won't have any huge zoom range unless you're ready to spend big bucks on a large heavy lens in addition ton the camera purchase. My camera setup only has a 4x zoom and so do most others with SLRs, and that wouldn't be good for a phillies game.

I just got a D90 over a month ago. I was shooting a sweet 16 a few weeks ago and I managed to drop it on the floor. Somehow I forgot to lock my flash on the camera and it slipped off. It fell pretty hard, the hotshoe mount dented in quite a bit and my 18-55mm lens broke right off lol. The camera still works like a charm though. As for the lens its pretty much useless now lol.
