I think HDR shots are really effective, i just hate the 'halo' ing effect that occurs when over done. I personally, dont work with it too often, but im referring to mainly shot number 11. This i feel is over worked, while numbers 1,3,4, and 7 are balanced really well. Like i said, i havent worked with HDR, but i feel like it is really easy to get carried away.

Maybe layer masks in photo 11 to help keep the sky dark around the bridge would help. It just bugs me that the sky is dark, except where the bridge is.

Overall, excellent shots. I feel that they are pretty decent.

yeah the first shot was a teaster and I had already numbered the rest lol so I didnt want to do it all over or add it at the end.

yeah I feel its beat on some, it deff puts a halo around the sides of things. and number 11 deff. around the bottom side and between the bridge its lit.

mind you guys this wasnt true HDR tho. its just one shot with editing that looks similar to hdr.

thanks for you criticism, its exactly what I was hoping for. still learning!

any more...?

Most look a little overworked, but there are definately a few gems in there. The Santa hat from the towhook cracked me up, though.

My final thought, is still that you overall have an idea. What i would recommend is, and this is something i do with alllll my series that i shoot, is when you think you are done, set up a presentation -- a slideshow in lightroom or something, and watch it the next day or whatever. whether you are staring at this photograph and manipulating it for minutes, or hours, you will become 'desensitized' to it. preview your photos a day later, or hours later, whatever. something to give your mind to adjust back to reality and whatnot. You will notice these things, like when things are overworked and will be able to correct them.

Also, im not familiar with your workflow, but keep in mind that every photo is different. No 2 photos will have the same exact settings and produce equally effective results. I know a few fellow students that will produce a spot-on curves outline for a photo, and apply it a batch of photos. Sometimes its OK, other times its like .

A few things that i try to do myself. make another attempt at some photos and take our criticism. im interested in seeing the progression!

Some nice pics. I really like the picture of the Trenton Makes, the World Takes bridge the best.
