trying my hand at photography

I've been a member of the forum, albeit an inactive member, for some time now. I recently decided to venture into trying my hand at car photography. Here are some shots from a roadtrip me and a few of my friends took to pittsburgh last weekend. Please criticize and let me know what you guys think! I'll be posting some of the shots on my flickr: http://flickr.com/photos/harris7139

The first one is unedited, minus the signature in the corner. I added some effects to the second one. Mainly selective coloring and a vignette. I think I like the feel of the unedited photos more than adding the effects, but thought I would play around with it. What kind of editing tricks do you guys like to use, if any?

Not really a quality photo, but it's just sweet:

I know the first photo was taken at 1/15 of a second, with an aperture of f/22, and and ISO of 100. The second was with the same ISO and aperture settings, but I can't recall the shutter speed. I know it was similar to the first. The third picture, the one in the tunnel was taken at 1/13 of a second, with an aperture of f/3.5 and an ISO of 400.

I was originally shooting the outside rolling shots at a much lower aperture than f/22 but it didn't capture the motion like I wanted. The car appeared to be going slow or not moving fast. With the high aperture, I thought it really captures the speed of the car.

that first rolling shot is awesome man. And the thrid one in the tunnel would have been better with a slower shutter speed, to get more of the blurr effect. But, awesome pics man!

I did do a few variations on the tunnel shot, messing with different shutter speeds, etc. I'll post some of the those shots when I get a chance. Thanks for the input!

Great shots all around. I like the first one, wish it had the backround of the second picture though.

Nice none the less!

using f22 is unnecessary and can really diminish the quality of your photos. somewhere around f11 will be fine and 1/60-1/80th is usually the norm for rolling/panning shots. that said, your shots do look pretty good.

I was surprised to see 22 too, but they dont look bad. f22 is usually a still shot setting imho.

even for stills, thats a terribly small aperture. i don't think theres ever a time i'd go over f16 and even thats quite a stretch.

I am using a Cannon T1i with the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens.

I was originally shooting at a low aperture (f/3.5) and it wasn't capturing the movement like I had wanted. Even though the car was moving, the shutter speed was fast enough to make it seem as if it were standing still. In attempt to capture that movement better, I (in my limited photography experience) just cranked the aperture up as high as I could go and continued shooting. The photos seemed to be turning out well, so I didn't really adjust or play with the aperture much after that. Next time I'm out shooting I'll try what you suggested and see how things go. Thanks for the tips!! Much appreciated.

Here is another one from the same series. Taken, again, at f/22 and 1/30.

You'll notice my composition is quite similar in all of these... still working on getting more creative angles. Have you guys found any cool angles you really like to use?
