crashed the teggy

so last night around 6 i was leaving my friends house, i went to slow down around a turn that looked icy and snowy.... once i hit my breaks the abs kicked in and made the car slide...(ABS never worked right in the snow just made things worse) so i gave it a little gas hoping it would regain traction but didnt... i ended up sliding up a curb taking out a mailbox and hitting a telephone pole on the passenger side the car is totaled... im pretty bummed about it but hey i cant do anything now... so iv been looking for a new project to start i wasnt quite ready right now but it looks like im going to have to be... if anyone knows of any eg civics for sale let me know im mainly looking for a shell but if the price is right ill consider... thanks everyone

abs doesnt make the car slide... it actually helps the situation 99.9% of the time by helping you to stop in a shorter distance and keep steering control. best to just stay on the brakes and let the abs do its thing, but when you've got momentum and no traction then its kind of hopeless at that point, the car is going to go the way it was going regardless.
sorry to hear about the accident though.

Not entirely true. If youre sliding in an AWD vehicle, standing on the gas can be very helpful. Even in a FWD you could have *some* luck, depending on how much time you have to pull it out of the slide before hitting something.

Hitting the gas always makes it worse with rwd though.

Sounds like you don't know how to drive. ABS doesn't necessacary help you stop faster, but it does help you to keep control. Also hitting the gas when your already sliding is the opposite of stopping. Plus how fast were you going? Almos all the curbs we have in my area have huge as snow mounds on that I would think would slow your car a crap load.

Glad your OK though.

Sounds like you don't own an awd vehicle. If I turn and start to understeer into a turn I just hit the gas and kick out the rear end. It looks sooo jdm.

I usually feel running without abs in snow allows me to stop faster digging up the snow and getting to the pavement. Otherwise your tires are rotating on top of the snow not getting the best traction. In most cases though if you're not used to it your stability while skidding is gone. Depending on how my car is acting in certain storms I'll pull it. Today my alignment is off enough my rear was tailing back and fourth so I just left the abs in. Didn't wanna make it to hairy. haha

I always pull the abs fuse when the roads are snow covered, its usless. Then again the WRX is the first car I've owned with abs, maybe I'm just used to not having it.

sorry to hear that. last night around 9 i was coming home from work and almost crashed a few times. rwd with a welded diff, bald tires.... haha it sucked.

going around a tight left hand curve, my car wouldnt hold the full degree and started to understeer. i tried everything i could to turn the car but it didnt want to have it. i ended up having to tap the ebrake and ride the snow bank with my rear end and all was fine. beats going head first off the road.

then atleast 3 people pulled out infront of me going under 1 mph while i was coming at them down a hill. as soon as i touched the brakes, all 4 locked up and the car would slide sideways down the road. that wasnt fun...

but thankfully i made it home without any crashing.

at 6pm i guess there was no snow banks on the turns yet. thats sucks man

Hitting the gas in a FWD vehicle when you're sliding in the snow isn't to stop, it's to redirection the car. Works for me all the time.

Glad your ok, sucks about the car though.

I know of a few people, who have installed a switch attached to the ABS power line. They always turn it off when nasty weather hits.
