1.8T's are not my thing personally but the noise you're describing is either the regular fan running after the car is shut down to help cool off the motor (which is normal) or the after-run pump, which is a small electric pump some VW's (most of them at this point) have that circulates coolant after the car is shut off. The noise should sound either like a fan running or a small kinda buzzy motor noise. VR6's do both 1.8T's I'm not 100% sure but someone that has one here will chime in soon.

Was it a fan or the after-run coolant pump? (you can physically see the fan spinning and feel air being pushed over the engine)
How long was the noise running? The fans shouldn't really be on too long unless there is a problem.
