Engine Break-in Process

This is for my '87 Conquest TSi. 2.6L turbo. The motor was rebuilt by Blitz Automotive in Kennett Square. It's got some upgrades to it. Nothing super crazy. I'm sick and don't really have a voice so I can't call them at this moment. Is there a typical break-in process to seat the rings, seals, etc.? Or do I need to call Blitz when I have a voice and have them walk me through a specific process for this motor?

Thanks...

Seriously, everyone is going to tell you something different. I would defintely talk to the engine builder about it because he may have specific recommendations for break-in based on the tolerances he used.

This is what you should definitely do though: Start the car and let it come up to normal temperature, turn it off and change the oil.

Here's where people will start to disagree: With my new motor, I brought it to different RPM's and then let the motor slow itself down repeatedly. Then brought the car home and changed the oil again. I don't believe in "easy" break-ins. I was at the track with probably 400 miles on the motor.

The key is to consistently accelerate and then let the motor slow the car down itself and to change the oil often. The rings are probably going to seat 90% of the way the first time you take it out. The last 10% in less than 1000 miles. Avoid highways so that you're not keeping the motor at the same RPM for any long periods of time.

Thanks for the info. I will give them a call when I don't sound like I'm underwater.

The motor has been started and run several times while we timed it, checked for/found/fixed leaks in the oil and coolant system, and some other things. It's still running kinda crappy at start-up with some hesitation and such, but we'll see what the builder says.

That could be throttle body seals, or a boost leak. I'm in agreement with Jess' methods, so after doing all that engine braking from various RPMs, I'd make yourself a tester and test to 25 PSI and go from there. Good luck with it, can't wait to see it on the road.

i'm in the process of breaking in my engine atm moment. What i've head to do is drive the car for about 100 miles under 3000 rpm and slow the engine down in gear. Keep it up till u reach 100 miles after that lug it up to redline* and let it drop again in gear. I'm reading on the link you posted and it seems to have good info. So i will wait and see what others say about that. I now have about 60miles on my rebuilt 87 supra engine.

This is actually what was used as a guideline for breaking in my motor. Over two years later and still going strong.
