Planning a trip to Japan... anyone been there?

Do they really have Skyrines?

Kidding... my friend has lived outside of Osaka for about 4 years, and all of a sudden he's talking about maybe moving back to the US next year. I don't want to regret never getting off my ass to go visit so its go time.
As it turns out, it looks like the best window of opportunity will be mid-September for me, which is a little sooner than I was originally thinking and I'm already feeling the pressure to book a flight and start making some plans.
I need to decide if I should fly to Tokyo then make my way down to Osaka (train is $120 each way), or fly right to Osaka and make my way around from there.

Once upon a time I was a big traveler... before the days of TST I was out of the country as much as I was in it, lots of trains, buses, planes, ferries, and so on... lots of hotels, hostels, and homestays, and lots of awesome adventures... about 30 countries in all I believe. I'm already psyched to get back into it a little although I'm limited by work to only about 2 weeks here. I was in Japan once for a 4-5 day stretch but this trip will be a lot different.

Anyway... has anyone been to Japan? Trying to get this to all materialize pretty soon and it looks like you need to make reservations with hostels 2-3 weeks in advance minimum, as well as trains, and of course the flight over there. I gotta get a move on so if anyone has any wisdom about it please share. I need to decide whats important for me to see and how long to spend in each place, then figure out the logistics. Going to go pick up a Lonely Planet tomorrow and do some reading.

Welp, hope this inspires some good travel convo. I'm psyched just thinking about it

Ha, I'm already dryheaving as I estimate the cost of the trip for myself, which includes crashing at my friend's place for at least a few days and hostels for the majority of the rest.

I went twice for business. To Osaka and to Tokyo. Toyko was a bit confusing for an anti-social person like me, and its so buzy and fast paced. But Osaka was awesome, I had room to move, see the scenery, and went out with some of the locals and had a great time.

Haha I didn't have to go to Japan to see that car, it was in York, PA last year . We did a sweet interview with Neil Tjin about it.
But yeah, this trip is totally not care motivated. If I see some sweet ones I'll try to grab some photos but this is more about getting back to life before cars.

OutToWin... what did you do in Tokyo and Osaka? Did you visit anywhere else while you were there? Last time I was there I was in Kobe. I took a day trip to Osaka and an overnight trip to Koya San which I am definitely planning to visit again. Going to incorporate Tokyo into this trip although you're not the first to say its a bit overwhelming. Not sure what else I should try to fit in but I'm planning to get that Lonely Planet book tomorrow and do some good reading.

Possibly the most JDM statement I haz ever seen.

But I have heard a lot of good things about Japan. I always used to look in the tuner mags in the back and see those little advertisements for a group trip to Japan for a discounted rate... but never really actually researched it.

Have fun man... take a bazillion pictures.

Calling them Skyrines was classic. Reminds me of Takuma Sato (F1 Driver) giving an interview and he said something about handling, it came out as "the hand-riing was off". have fun in Japan and don't let the stress of planning get to you, it'll be worth it.
