sr20 problems

alright, here goes.. i was driving my 240 the other night and something happened in my trans that has yet to be determined, but in 2nd gear, the car acted like it wasnt in gear, and later did the same in third.. when this happened, the rpm's spiked hard and fast, so i pulled over and popped my hood and my exhaust manifold was glowing red.. i let it sit and idle for a minute or two while we tried to figure out what was going on.. when it cooled off, everything was fine until i got it home and turned it off.. a friend that was there had me restart it and there was a squeeling from the turbo and the rpm's wouldnt stay steady (900-2000) back and forth.. im pretty sure the turbo is shot but dont have the money to be wrong, but would the turbo cause the idle issues or do i have another issue on top of that?

well usually when your in gear, you hit the gas, and you go nowhere while the rpm's spike, the clutch is slipping. as for the oscillation of rpm's at idle, that usually means you have a vacuum leak. i am in no way a mechanic, and i would have it checked out and get a professional opinion.

i agree with the clutch slipping, but i havent checked that out yet, but me and my friend have both gone over the vacuum lines and they all seem to be in good condition and properly routed and connected

You might want to try physically checking the turbo for damage, rather than just guessing. Pull off the compressor inlet pipe and see what's going on.

well when we shut the car down, you can hear the compressor wheel squeeling on the inlet walls and we checked to see it the wastegate actuator was working and it wasnt opening the gate.. hopeful replacement this weekend, fingers crossed.. and it turns out the slave cylinder was failing and leaking fluid

sorry to hear it man. if it makes you feel better i have to fused bolts stuck in the the turbo elbow. and since i only have one bolt actually holding up the down pipe my car sounds like major ass and i have no way of getting the crap off of the elbow.

yeah because they don't want to drill the elbow while it's on the car. they want to take the whole manifold off. that'll be 300 dollars for the labor

It's near impossible, even with a right angle drill, to drill those bolts on, and then tap it accordingly. Being a shop owner myself, I would not even ATTEMPT that job on car.

If they charge 80 dollars an hour, that is easily a 3 hour job AT a minimum, figuring an hour on, hour to repair, and hour to replace....

exactly my point, i'm paying to basically the price to do a turbo swap just to get two bolts out and i'm not doing it for a stock elbow. i'd be upgrading something. so my boy and i are just gonna take it apart when he gets off work today. hopefully we can bump it off in 3 hrs granted nothing goes wrong....but these are 240's something always goes wrong on basic maintenance
