Tragedy Strikes...

This was on another forum, RS25.com and I felt the need to post it here.

Quote:
I'm going to preface this post buy letting you guys know that I have been a subaru enthusiast since before I could drive. I bought my MY00 RS when I was 17 and have been researching everything that has to deal with subarus since I was about 15. I read multiple forums every day and try to learn as much as I possibly can. This has rubbed off on all of my friends. They see what I have done with my car and have also become enthused and Interested. So most of my friends have been converting to subarus since I've gotten mine.

My one friend who I will not name started to get the bug. I took notice to this and we started searching for a WRX for him. He wanted a project that would require work, giving him a true appreciation for the vehicle. I agreed that this would be the best way to get into the subaru community and learn a thing or two. So we found a 03 WRB WRX in rough shape. The transmission had a blown 2nd gear, smoking TD04, bad IAC, bad MAF, split heater core, bad brakes, and I can't even remember the rest of the problems. My friend asked if I could help him get it in working order. I basically became his mechanic and we made the car into something awesome; big 16g, sti pinks, walbro 255, GM BCS, helix down pipe, carbon TI, yadda yadda yadda. I tuned it via opensource and a tactrix cable and logged everything. Logs looked awesome, AFRs, timing, knock, load, IDC, everything looked great. He drove it for 1300 miles without a hitch.

We leave a party one evening taking a curvy back road. We both were not familiar with the road. He starts accelerating and traveling at speeds that made me very uncomfortable. I told him to slow down but it was too late. We went around a downward left turn at around 90 MPH. The car understeers. We go through a fence hit a tree and the car flips end-over-end for 111 feet until it hits another tree where it stops and lands on its roof. I remained conscious for the whole accident. When the car came to rest my right leg was under the roof, crushing it and not allowing me to free myself from the vehicle. I was in the worst pain of my life. I could barely move. I started freaking out fearing that the car could catch on fire, but I was trapped. I managed to get my cell phone out of my pocket in order to call 911 but it was destroyed. The accident was on a back road and the car could not be seen from the road. It took about an hour for firefighters to arrive and another half our to free me from the car. It was 23 degrees out. When the car came to rest I screamed for my friend, there was no answer. I knew the reality of the situation. I was flown to the hospital.

I arrive at the hospital my right thigh is 40'' in circumfrence, much larger than my waist. I have two blood clots, one in my leg and one in my lungs. My right shoulder is fractured in 2 places with a dislocation. I had severe gashes and cuts all over the right side of my body. Doctors were unsure if I would be able to keep my leg. Around 5 AM I was informed that my friend was killed. I was hysterical. I later found out that he died instantly upon hitting the first tree. He suffered a broken back, fractured skull, and many other injuries. He was ejected from the car upon hitting the second tree and was thrown around 40 feet away into a river face down.

I was able to keep my leg and have been recovering. This has been the hardest thing I've ever dealt with. I lost an amazing friend who decided to act careless and I almost died. I am now a lot more thankful for everything I have and feel very lucky. I wish for everybody on this forum to learn from this. Realize that your actions have consequences and you are mortal. Life is valuable and there is no reason for anybody to endure what I have experienced. I will live with this for the rest of my life and will think about it every second of every day. I will have physical problems for the rest of my life, but I am alive. I wake up every day without a friend knowing it wasn't his time. I will be editing this more I just wanted to get this off my mind while i had a few minutes.
I posted this as a reminder, that street racing, or just plain driving too fast in any situation is not just a bad idea, but its also dangerous to other, innocent people.

Its sad that we even need a reality check, as tragedys such as this can be prevented just by taking your foot off of the accelerator.

Sometimes I drive aggressively, so I am no angel when it comes to this, but I swear, never when someone else is in the car.

Ya I mean 90 mph down a banked turn on some country road, thats going way too far. Yea, I have fun on back roads too but I never push the limits of the road like that. I like to be smart about being stupid if that makes any sense.

But ya man, thanks for the reality check. And seriously to everyone reading this thread, please be smart even when ur having fun. Because it doesnt matter how good u are or how many times uv done something. One time where things mess up is all it takes. Please everyone be careful. Having fun is fine, but NEVER be reckless. Cuz reckless gets u and others killed.

I think we've all done some stupid thing in our cars that we can't believe it made it out in one piece lol but i think most of us has grown up from that. what makes me angry is to see the ones that don't and think they're superman forever. I'm a granny driver when I have passengers. One of the first things my dad taught me when i started driving is that its not only your life on the line if you want to dick around.

I'll admit sometime I'll have some fun but my policy has always been not when others are in my car. I've had a few people try to egg me on while they were in the car but I refuse, because I don't want a death of someone else on my hands... especially a friend.

I agree 100%, even though there were moments in the past where I didn't make a smart decision. Luckily, nothing bad happened.

am i the only one who doesnt feel bad? the kid got what he deserved. i mean may he rest in peace, but i in no way will feel bad about that. i know my limits when i drive spiritedly and never go over the limits of myself or the car. thats just sheer stupidity driving like that on an unfamiliar road.
