Mets Pick Up Wagner

Well I am a big sports fan supporting all of my Philly teams and I can't believe that the Phillies let Billy Wagner go. Wagner was one of the best closers in the business and the Phillies had him. I hope this doesn't hurt their season this year. And it's interesting that we pick up a centerfielder coming from a World Series team to the Phillies. I hope he helps us out.

Seriously, I'll never understand the way team owners think. Wagner is obviously one of the few overpowering closers in the league. He had 38 saves on a team that won 88 games, keeping a low 1.51 ERA and an impressive 10.1 K/9 ratio. How do you not try your hardest to keep a player with that level of talent, regardless of whether or not you just picked up an awesome center fielder.

You gotta realize.. he's in his mid 30's.. who knows how his arm will be in 4 years on that contract.. let alone 2 years. He is a GREAT pitcher.. and I always loved seeing him come in.. I wish the Phillies could have kept him.. but he was way too expensive... the Phillies need to invest in some better starting pitchers. Madsen will definitely pitch relief.. he is a strong pitcher, just needs more experience. Let's hope Gillick can make good out of this situation.

btw, thank heaven for Ryan Howard being signed for good =)

Yes very true Doug about Ryan Howard being signed because I didn't want Thome anymore. All he was doing was taking up space on the bench. Lets go PHILLIES once next year comes around.

I'm a Mets fan (I know, boo!) so I'm really excited about the aquisition of Wagner and Delgado, who personally, I think the Mets shoulda picked uo last year instead of Beltran. But it should make for a decent Mets team next year.

you should be excited that, for some reason, your club forgot about their budget this year... or making any profits for that matter. unfortunately, that's something that the phillies organization will never do...

anyone hear that they could have signed him before last year for 24-30mil/3 years? that's a lil expensive for a closer that only knows heat, but he was a great competitor for the team. thanks wade...

gillick is doing a good job so far, but he's got most of his work ahead of him.
