new computer thread

Ok so I finally got my hands on a new comp. well pretty much...
well, my dads comp blew up, or i guess the hard drive went. He got a whole new comp for himself, and got a new hard drive put in his old one, and now his old one is mine. Im actually on it right now. its nice

my intentions are to type out my homework with it as well as hook up my camcorder and edit my video. it already has windows movie maker on it.

i just want to get it situated.

on the computer i found this information...

System:
windows XP
professional
version 2002
service pack 3

computer:
intel(R)
pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.53GHz
2.53GHz, 640 MB of RAM

is this good to work off of?

now, if i click on this icon in my start menu next to my clock, its a red sheild with a white X, it goes into the windows security center.
it says in there that my firewall is on, and automatic updates are on... but my virus protection is highlighted red and says out of date.
under that it goes on to say-
"AVG anti-virus free reports that it might be out of date. Click recommendations for suggested actions you can take. (link)
Note: Windows does not detect all antivirus programs."

also, i see there is already an AVG Free 8.0 icon on my desktop.

If i click on the AVG icon, it brings me to a page that says that my anti virus anti spyware and update manager all have outdated databases, but the email scanner license link scanner and resident sheild are all active.

So whoever built the comp already got me started with AVG, but is this what i should be using? or should i uninstall it and use something else (if so, what?)

this is the 1st computer i've gotten that isn't already a virus ridden hand-me-down. id really like to start off on the right foot and keep it clean and strong.

what should i do?

thanks

I'm no professional, but it looks like you could use more RAM. Also, uninstall AVG and download a newer free version of it.

I think so...I've never had a problem. I had the same thing happen to a spare laptop we have...it wouldn't update or anything. I uninstalled/installed a new version and everything was good.

Avg is awesome and I like ZoneAlarm for a firewall. More Ram is a good thing. Is this the new computer thread or the thread for your computer? lol

Well I guess it's the thread for my new computer... I remember someone elses thread 'my comp accidentally ... the whole thing' and i was asking questions in there about building a new comp... Instead of bringing that one back i just made a new one. Afterall I didnt build this thing, i just aquired it.

Now i just want to know what i should generally be doing. I updated my AGV free 8.0 and it seems to be all good now... the windows security center said i already have a firewall up and running? so am i OK with that or should i get zonealarm as well?

i really want to keep the comp clean with the least amount of **** i dont need as possible... but if you feel its something that i need, id probably go for it.

and, should i be letting windows do automatic updates all the time? windows is already saying that it found 10 updates for me and it wants to know how i want to install them...

also, is this comp going to be good enough for editing video?

whats the best way to go about storing video? (raw footage, as well as edited clips and such) ive seen/ heard of external hard drives, flashcards... im not sure if i would need these types of things, or if this comp is good enough to just save hours of video to it...? im guessing that would slow it down and id like to avoid that

how much space does 60 minutes of miniDV take up on a comp?

An external drive is good for backing up and storing video. XP does have a firewall built in, some stick with it and some install a new one that is your call. I do let it check for updates but since I am a gamer I choose when to install them so it doesn't happen in the middle of a game. I am sure someone else can answer your video questions.

Thanks. Now im wondering if the windows updates take up storage space or what happens to them once i install them? seems like they will all keep adding up until the comp doesnt move anymore

Yeah some of the windows updates take up a lot of space but it's either that or have your pc vulnerable to whatever threat some 13yr old found last week lol. Externals are cheap now if you are worried about space.

throw that POS out and bring up my thread you mentioned and build one.

don't waste your money upgrading. sounds like it has 3 256 ram cards in it?

I didn't read the whole thread so forgive me if you've answered...

how old is the computer? If its 5-6 years old, like my first one was that i replaced... i went looking for parts and things at the store were pretty limited for my MB. and even then, the prices of stuff are only slightly less for the better MB components.

You can build something slick computer for 500-600, or you can drop $100 on ram for this one, 100-200 on a video card, etc, and still be left with poop.

x2 what scape said. For any kind of video editing, you pushing the limit ram wise. I can tell you now, your gonna try to watch it and its gonna come up choppy and slow. As for security, ive always used norton. Im sure you can find some decent open source applications out there that are free too.

haha, he isn't pushing any kind of limit with that amount of ram... he cannot do video editing at all w/ that computer.

Give this thing to your grandmom

people write programs (virus') for norton and mcaffee since they are so widely used. I use AVG. I only get a virus when i download copious amounts of porn. Even then, its usually something stupid that AVG picks up. Note, since i use this computer for work related stuff I don't download porn haha

Why? They are useless machines and you can pickup a board, dual core, and 2 gigs of ram for like $200.

I'm sorry I can't give anything out, we use a recycling center for our computer stuff. I checked the log and this is what we gave them last week:

200 Intel Motherboards (965chipset)
212 Intel P4Ds (various speeds)
37 Intel Xeon Server Boards
23 Intel Xeon CPUs (various speeds)
200G Ram (Estimated)
400 4 U cases (estimated)

All of this is useless but working equipment that will be melted down for whatever.

A decent computer should cost about $600-$700 to build or prebuilt can be slightly lower if you choose last year's model.
