Help about an imported car
Email: dfx987@comcast.net City, State, Zip: Newark, DE 19702 Description: Unlike a lot of other people that I have talked to, it seems just about everyone wants a Nissan Skyline or classic Skyline GT-R, if they were to import a car. I on the other hand, basically hate two doors for the most part, and refuse to have a 2-door as a first car, if I ever end up getting a 2-door. So I looked around for something fits my needs and I found the following... I've had my eyes on a sports edition Toyota Aurion for a while. Now, the car is sold in a few countries, but all I know is that it is sold in Japan and Australia. And I wanted the Australian version for a number of reasons. However, I have no idea about importing or how to go about doing this, so basically I need help. |

Go buy a GS300, swap it with a 2JZ, get the Toyota badges and lights and poof you have a badass "ADM"/"JDM" 4 door beast. Seriously, they're baller.

This is the wrong section unless you intend on paying someone for the information you are asking for, but even then it wouldn't be the car you are buying. I am moving the thread now to general car related chat. Thanks

Check the NHTSA site at http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import/ to see if you want to do what they require. If so, go for it.

Obviously you know exactly what you want so don’t let some guys on the Internet tell you that you shouldn't get that particular car. However, its tuff getting a full car shipped into the states from another country not to mention it wont be cheap. So much that you will prob give up on it… trust me. You also mentioned this is your first car so I have to say your def. not taking the easy way out of getting one.. But I respect that!
There is ALOT of BS with doing what you want done... ALOT. I would contact a local customs agent (broker) and ask him for details on what needs to be done before you find an actual source for the car. This way you'll know that whoever your dealing with to get the actual car is doing it legit (if there is such a thing with this process). Then search for companies selling JDM cars and contact them with your request. Canada from what I understand can import full JDM cars without much trouble so you might find a good source there. BE CAREFULL, A lot of companies CAN get you the car here but you may never be able to register it. So you will also need to contact your state on that. Good luck..

Ok, wow, that was certainly intersting. Alright, there is a number of retarded / crazy / cool reasons that I want this specific car. It is a TOYOTA, not a LEXUS. True car purists, prefer the main moniker over the subdivisions. Kinda like how if I got a GX, I would rather have the Landcruiser Prada name, or whatever it is called. And I am sorry, I personally think that letters and numbers as names are retarded, thank God that some luxury / expensive car companies don't do this, i.e. Lambo. Not to mention, I find it difficult to remember which car is which sometimes with all these letter / number / both type names.
Ok, going further, having a car not made in this country, sounds amazing, and again, I am already warning you folks that this may sound stupid to you, but this is the equivalent to me over owning the actual game console, over downloading an emulator and ROMs, the purist factor. A Camry with modified facias and emblems, will never be a true Aurion, not to mention, that would take a lot of work to get the materials to make it looks exactly the same. Point 3 fits here and by itself. Right hand drive, seems to be the thing for this car, and this only seems to be where this car is sold in...but a Camry with left hand drive and all the bells and whistles that makes it feel like an Aurion, will still not be an Aurion because it doesn't have right hand drive. Also, I would be an American car, not an Australian car (where it is sold, not the company)...so that again defeats the purist purpose. Having right hand drive in an American country, where left hand drive is the thing, seems very interesting. Other than that, the car is just perfect for me. I don't want no compact car, I am 6'0, I don't know how large or tall people fit into 2-door compact coupes or even 4-door compact coupe / sedans, but I prefer to have comfort over gas mileage. So the car I wanted had to be a mid-size car, I explained my distaste for 2-doors in general, so it has to be a 4-door. I would prefer a 4-door coupe, but I will take a 4-door sedan. And this is pretty damn close to a 4-door coupe, imo. It should be fast, and look mad stylist. On the only really negative for me, the car is expensive as heck and it is still a souped up Camry. But that again, makes it somewhat interesting. And I wanted a car, not very well known, not common by importists or people in general, and is unheard of for the most part in this country. I have yet to see or hear about an Aurion at an import show, let me know if this exists...I also don't really keep up with this stuff either, so that could be why. Proven and the rest of you, this was a tough decision, but if I have to go with a 2nd car and one that I am going to buy, I am totally going to take this seriously. PS: I would love to shock the hell out of my friends, family, and the drivers around me in general, it will be just too much. There are unintentional plus's to this later. This is a decision that I completely feel is worth the money (when I have it, and plenty of it to spend, or to comfortably spend) and will pay off in way more ways than one. I think I am pretty dead set on doing this. As far as I have heard from talking to an importist who brought a '91 Skyline to Newark, DE...the process isn't excruciating and you won't have to sell your soul, and as far as I know, that guy was very happy with his decision. |

Oh yeah, since I botched in my first post. This would be my 2nd car, first buy. I own a 1998 Honda Accord LX Sedan i-4, in case no one noticed on my side panel. Pops bought that for me 4 years ago for 5 G's.

I read a while ago while doing some research on this that you cannot import any car that has not been crash tested on U.S. soil to the united states to be registered for anything other than show use. The only exception to this is if the car is comparable to a model sold in the U.S. The reason why skyline importation is so successful, is because back in either the late 90's or early 2000's, a company by the name of "Motorex" crash tested 3 R-33's...after approval they were allowed to import and sell these cars to customers after emissions specifications were met. However, the company went under about 4 years ago after issues about the legality of them importing all skylines since only the r33 had been approved. That and the owner of the company was later accused of kidnapping, assault and some other ****.
I know registration is different from state to state, but that's what i found out when i was looking at it about a year ago.

Not going to happen. You would need way to much money for this to work and it wouldn't be worth it. You'd have to buy atleast three cars just for the crash testing.
Also, there are many cars available, legally, in the U.S. that aren't built here so I don't know why you think it "sounds amazing".
