These were taken at the Conowingo dam on route 1 where it crosses the Suquehanna river in MD. I'll be there tomorrow morning as well. Eagles are there in great numbers and should remain that way until mid to late February. If you want to take a ride to photograph them, you'll need at least 200mm. But, to get close, a 300 or 400mm with a TC would be better.
There is a bit of noise, but I missed the exposure a bit on the first 2 shots and had to bump it up in processing. I'll be going to the dam quite a bit this season and I'll be sure to post some more, especially after I get my 500/4.

those are beautiful. Let alone the fact that you actually found bald eagles.

The flying shots are great, some really nice light. The way it outlines the birds really makes them pop out.
I brought #3 on my desktop and for some reason there's more color and contrast out of the browser. Weird because they're in sRGB... #3 is a great shot, maybe a little more contrast but as is it's really nice.

really nice shots rich... i have a 200 with a 1.4x on a DX body so i'm not sure if that will give me enough reach or not but if you think it would be worthwhile i'd love an excuse to get out and shoot.

I'd say that 400mm is the minimum focal length needed for the dam for most shots. A 200mm with a 1.4 and a DX body can do the trick. You will need to do some cropping, but a good time can be had just seeing these birds in person without the confines of a zoo, However, there are times where the birds land close enough that just a plain 200mm will suffice. It's a crap shoot. That's the reason I am looking to get either a 500/4 or 600/4.

The blacks and yellow on the bird's wings just pop a bit more, that's all. Still looks great in the browser, just better on my desktop.
