When you're sick, where does all the damn snot (mucus) come from? Answer inside...

As I sit here blowing my nose every 10 mins without feeling like I'm getting anywhere at all, I wondered... where the hell does all this snot come from and how is it made so quickly?
I'm sure some of you already know this answer, and even your kid or brother in 3rd grade knows, but I didnt so I googled it up. Just sharing the info for anyone else who may be able to learn something from it today...

Quote:

Where does snot come from?
Mike

Dear Mike:
You blow your nose, out comes snot. Five seconds later, you're stuffed-up again. Where is all this mucus coming from?
When it comes to science questions, we like to consult kid-friendly sites. (As English majors, we need simple answers.) Fortunately, Kidzworld fits the bill. The site explains that snot comes from mucus membranes that line the inside of your nose. The membranes secrete mucus in order to protect you from dust, germs, and pollen. The snot traps all this nasty stuff so it doesn't get into your lungs.

As Ask Dr. Universe informed us, the mucus acts like a shower inside your nose, washing away dead cells and germs. When you have a cold, even more mucus forms to get rid of the germs as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, this can result in too much mucus, blocking the air passages and leading to a stuffed-up nose.

Still, the occasional clogged schnoz is a small price to pay for ridding your body of germs. Three cheers for snot! Drip, drip, hooray! Drip, drip, hooray! Drip, drip, hooray!
ok so its a good thing, i guess.

so, in an attempt to save you from germs entering your lungs... the mucus membranes create snot... which in turn attempts to suffocate you... stupid bodies...

More or less.

I love how the body designs mucus to flush all germs/dust/etc out of the body, and then as a natural reaction to the stuffy nose you sniff harder. Right, out of the body, by drawing air in rapidly. Proof there is no God, or that he's an ass.

the body is panicking and overcorrecting... needs more seat time apparently to know how to react with the appropriate amount of counter-steer, should go to a driving school.

Alright, Bry' -- then why does the snot turn green when you have a sinus infection?

I always get THE worst sinus infections, and since we're on the subject of snot, might as well ask why it changes colors for sinus infections versus a regular cold.

because the snot is doing its job... when its green... thats the nasty stuff that it is removing from your sinus cavities... the infection

when your snot is "normal" colored, you don't have an actual sinus infection... just a cold or whatever...

because you've got that flap thing at the back of your throat that leads to you sinus cavity... ever see someone put a piece of spaghetti in their nose and have it come out their mouth? we all have that ability... the flap is there, and the mucus is dripping
