What do you say...

When people ask why you modify/work on cars?

I've been thinking about this recently as a LOT of people ask why I dump so much money into my two cars.

I do it because its my hobby and when my life gets crazy (which it does a lot) it brings me peace of mind. That and I don't have a g/f and don't like flashy/fancy things so I have nothing else to spend my money on.

Also because it's comforting to know that your driving something common, and made it YOURS.

How about everyone else?

at first with my old cars, i modded to "fit in" to the niche of the automotive world

now i mod for personal enjoyment and benefit, its why im doing mostly go stuff with my msm because i love the fun to drive aspect of the car and want to make it better.

a lot of people ask why i work on my cars and bikes so much. i tell them because im too cheap to pay someone else to do it lol

and why do i want modification in the 1st place? idk. i guess to make the driving experience better (handle better, go faster, look meaner, sound better, feel better...) also its like automotive ADD. some people just cant keep the tools in the box lol

..... i dont follow the "common" thing.... once most tuners get ahold of a car ...its is far from common real quick.

my friends/gfs gave up this arguement a long long time ago... they also stopped asking me to stop racing..and stopped asking me why i insist on going on long car cruises...

Ever since I was young I would modify everything I owned (bmx, skateboards, dirtbikes, quads, then got my drivers license and got into cars). Of course anyone can be into speed/ handling/ looks but not everyone does their own mods (or at least pays someone too). Some will go buy a mustang if they want to go fast right now, some will buy a small sports car cause they want handling right now, and some will spend 50-80k to buy into "style" but with me I would much rather buy "nothing" and turn it into something. It’s prob why I love the Import tuner scene so much. Most imports like Honda and nissan for example are not fast amazing cars in stock form (the previous years not the GTR). Turning them into something fast with amazing handling is MUCH more gratifying then just buying what a manufacturer made for you and there are 10000's just like yours out there. Theres nothing really special about that.

I am special and thats why I mod (Kidding)

I think my desire for modifying cars comes from my "need for speed", handling, style, image, and not wanting to take the easy way out along with being creative and NOT having what the adverage joe has.

heroin wasnt good enough...

Not sure why i like to go fast, but ive always been that way with everything i owned, it started with bmx bikes then dirtbikes and now cars. As far as modding goes i always wanted to have the machine that was different from the crowd.

When i wrecked my crx racing this summer my girlfriend about broke with me over the fact that i was more pissed about my car being ****ed up then having to be taken to hospital, and she still hates the fact that 2 days after i was already working on my next car. Not really sure why going fast in a car built with your own two hands gives me such a rush but sometimes i like it better than sex... hahahaha well maybe not that much

Beating a $30k car with your $3k car is VERY satisfying.

I dont think so... there is a lot more about going fast in a car. Your car still looks like a $3k pos while they have a nice car.

i have one hobby. my cars.

i love them, i love making them nice, clean, and quick.

at the end of the day it's humbling, and it just keeps me happy.

i like to say... "you have your cigarettes, beer, and drugs...i drive a red vette, and have no bad habits. do the math you could have one too" (this it to the low life people i work with)

I mod my car because stock is boring and I just have a habit of testing my own limits whenever I'm given the chance because it makes me feel alive. I don't care if you drive a base model lancer, or a Ford GT, stock will just never do it for me. I need to have that bond with my car: the blood, sweat, tears to respect it. I need to feel the wheels slipping away in a corner to know where my limits are; I need to know that I can squeeze that extra PSi out of my turbo (mind you it's already spinning at 100k RPMs as it is); I need to know what my my beefy-ass brakes that carry my car from 100-0 in so&so amount of time actually feels like.
I also mod because I like the idea of a sleeper. I like that my 4cyl, with full interior, can get the jump on cars with twice+ the amount of dispacement I have just becasue of the hairdryer on the front of my car. But like I said, I just don't do "ordanairy," it's ghey.

But on the flipped side, stock is nice and usually reliable.

I honestly do not like working on cars. I like driving them. But, I had to get good at building/fixing cars that broke while I was driving them.

My 240 is WAY over-built for what I use it for. So I'm glad that I dont have to work on it much

Had a friend of mine tell me I could have spent all of the money that I spent on my car and just bought a new car.

I looked at her and said, no offense, but there's nothing that I could buy new for 10K that even comes close to what I have right now.

At first when my buddy Matt let me come to his house and help him with his projects. I told people that I liked working on cars because it relaxed me. It was something that I could do that would take my mind off of everything around me and I could always learn something too. Then when I started working on cars at Matt's almost everyday and started running into the stubborn installs and the late nights, and the confusion as to why the car was doing a certain thing or another, I realized that working on cars consistently sucked... let alone friends cars.

So I kinda let that die after our most recent project. I love working on my own car because I can tell people that I did a lot of things myself and it makes me feel good and when they ask how I can teach (or attempt to at least) them how and give them just that little bit of knowledge. I do it because you can always do something to a car and it never gets old and the uniqueness is awesome.
