possible the pads or calipers could be worn down to an extent

Most likly in need of pads/fluid. Once the pads wear way down, it causes the fluid leval in the resevoir to drop, which triggers the warning lights to stay on. The abs light shouldn't be on, but that may be a GM thing. You can usually get the ABS module to blink out its trouble code with a paper clip, check the J-body forums for how to, and what the codes are.

Some cars the ABS light stays steady if there is a problem with the system itself

Most likely the fluid is low which would cause the abs light to illuminate... ^ mitsubishis do that too haha

Just a heads up, if the ABS light is illuminated, most likly the ABS is non-functional, so drive a bit more cautiously, as a hard stop -will- lock up the brakes.
