2.5 Oil Starvation Issues?

Didn't see this posted in here. You 04 / 05 2.5L guys... may want to check this out if you've got a lot of mileage.

Have you checked YOUR banjo lately?

So does this thing only exist on the 2.5 or only an issue for the 2.5 or what?

No, its only on the 2.0. I just said it was 2.5 to throw everyone off.

Kidding....If you take the time and read the article by Deadbolt, there is no mention of the 2.0. It references only the 2.5's. The actual TSB issued by Subaru actually only references the STi, Forester and Baja. A production line change was made in 05 for those 3 vehicles. So it sounds like it only affects 04's and early 05 2.5's. I'm going to check my service manual to see if the 2.0's have one.

My '04 had them in it, I removed em about 2 years ago.

As long as they are working properly the screens wont hurt anything. The problem arises when they either clog or get lodged in the oil passage blocking flow.

It only takes about 5 minutes per side to get them out if you're familiar with wrenching on things.

Edit: Actually, i never removed that one. The ones I removed are the AVCS filters, which had similar problems with clogging or getting stuck and would stop your AVCS from functioning resulting in poor idle quality.

I understand that the article only notes the 2.5 but I also see the TSB was out in Feb. 05 which is well before the 2.5 WRX. Seems odd that there would be a part that filters oil to the turbo but only on the 2.5 and not the 2.0 is all. So my question was really in regards to does the part exist on both engines and is it just a problem on the 2.5 or is it not on the 2.0 at all.

TSB States the following:

APPLICABILITY: 04MY FORESTER 2.5L TURBO, BAJA 2.5L TURBO, AND IMPREZA STI 2.5L TURBO.

While i agree its weird it doesn't say anything about the 2.0... i can only conclude from that these filters were only used in 04 for the 2.5L turbo engines.

This was posted on the STi forum awhile back, apparently it's an easy fix to just remove them. I haven't touched them and really am not worried about it since I'm still on the stock snail. I'll go through the system when I go rotated.

Yea, back when I worked for SOA the techs out in the field would call from time to time saying they had an engine failure from this problem.
