Grinding noises coming from drivetrain

Let me explain my situation here.

When I purchased my car, it had a light flywheel and aftermarket clutch installed. It made a grinding noise a bit then. The grinding noise only occurs when the car is in gear, going down the road coasting. It gets louder with speed (although I thought it only did it 1-4 gears, but it does it in all gears). As soon as I push in the clutch or take it out of gear, it stops.

I can barely hear it at 20mph and under. Anything above that it gets worse. 60 mphs is just a PITA to coast while in gear because it sounds like my car is giving itself anal.

I recently had a new clutch installed. This made it get louder... A LOT louder. I'm changing my rear diff and tranny fluid tomorrow, however, I am gauging other peoples opinions as well.

Could it the flywheel bearing? I don't know when it was installed and I drive the car hard (and the previous owner autocrossed it.) I'd hate to pull everything out since it was just apart but if thats what it could be...

James. Im 99% sure its transmission related. The throwout bearing and the pilot bearing are both brand new. Since it goes away when you push in the clutch and take it out of gear Im pretty sure thats it ;)

change the fluid like I said and see what happens.

Did he get new gears? If so, maybe the person who installed them didn`t do such a great job

Yea, most likely its the Tranny, maybe the front Diff ryan? Well, flush the fluid and go from there.

Well, changed out the fluid. It had the normal shavings which is expected... but it also had a metal chunk that cant out. It wasn't huge, smaller than 6mm but it was still there.

The car runs fantastic, minus the tranny. Its now makes noises when changing gears... I think its on its way out !

My car made the same noise, like a grinding noise on decel while in gear. I cracked my trans open last week and found that the bearing in the transfer case that the center diff rides on was broken, and the noise was the bearing. The diff was also rubbing the inside of the transfer case.

I picked up a trans for $150 bucks. Once the old one gets pulled, I'm opening it to see what the hell was going on.

Sounds like the center diff to me. Just a guess though without hearing the noise. Mind kinda did the same with the progressing noise going through the gears. I drove it like that for almost a year before it decided to go out on me. Good luck.

Haha thanks. I've been doing a TON of research on gear oil. A lot of people have had luck with Uncle Scotty's but apparently is sulfuric attributes don't do well on our trannies. Redline apparently turns to pudding in cold weather (but works great when its warm?) and Royal Purple isn't anything special.

I run redline stock specified weight and never have problems in the winter. If anything it might feel a tad stiff on a really cold day for the first couple shifts. I know tons of people will run different oils putting little bits of other things in their transmissions but I just rather play it safe. Chances have it if it's making the noise I think it is the damage is done and it'll eventually go. You never know though till you crack open the transmission or diff.

Sounds like a problem with the center differential. I've seen alot of trouble with the bearings from the center differential to the front differential.
