Bike insurance

Hey guys,

I'm about to pick up a bike to do my commuting on. What's the insurance like on these things? Any particular company that is best? Any "free" discounts?

IMO! You really have to shop around. Cause its so different on each bike and each driving abstract. I always thought Ryder was the cheapest but there not in my situation. I have State Farm.

I've always wondered what bike insurance is like. Most people I know don't insure them because it's a waste of money.

liability on motorcycles is really cheap, cause they really cant do that much damage to another vehicle (as compared to a car) but full coverage is insanely expensive. progressive i found was the cheapest... just make sure you do it online (they give free quotes). i pay 220 a year and im 19 with a 600 sportbike. my quote for full coverage was over $2k! so i figured that wasnt worth it cause i would have to total my biek every other year to get my money's worth.

i beleive state farm is the cheapest if you are buying new...

I was looking for liability costs....I don't need insurance for an old beater....I can always just buy a new one.

what happens when they get pulled over?? wait they dont get pulled over do they??

back in topic. mine is about 105 a month for just liability. you need proof of insurance in order to switch a title or buy something brand new. theres no real way of getting around it.

$1,260 a year for liability? ouch.

And no bikes can't get pulled over. Unless your gay.

I've got a quote from progressive for 600/year for liability...not too bad... anyone know if it'll be lower if I take that riding course that the state offers for free?

I have State Farm and pay $22/month for full coverage. Of course, I'm old, have a clean driving record, and have 4 vehicles on my policy. I wouldn't ride without at least liability in case you hit someone else. As for full coverage, the only time that would really come in handy is if your bike is totaled or stolen. If you just need some new plastics and/or levers and such, its usually cheaper to do it yourself than get your insurance company involved. Your rates will probably skyrocket and it usually costs less than $1000 to fix.

Oh and to Kevin, everyone crashes their bike at sometime. Its the old addage 'Its not if you crash, but when you crash', just a matter of time. I only crashed my bike once, but I 'dropped' it twice.

State farm is the way to go.. they go by the CCs of the bike.. the higher the more expensive.. My Ducati is $40 a month.. I have clean driving record and I also have my car and my house on the same policy for a slight discount..

I use dairyland. I stay away from Progressive. They quoted me one rate then sent me a bill for 10 times what they quoted. I pay about $250 a yr for full coverage.
