Looking at a talon

So I'm looking at trading my car for a 95 talon tsi awd with 123k miles. Now I don't know too much about these cars so I wanna know if this is a good deal or not and what to look for if I go look at it.
It is a 7 bolt with these mods
-NKG wires and denso plugs
-Red top battery
-Big 16g turbo
-HKS EVC 4 boost controller
-DSMLink (this alone with the ecu is $700)
-17" nippon lightstar wheels with brand new tires
-AEM UEGO Wideband setup
-painted valve cover
-HUGE FMIC
-Silicone radiator piping
-Infinity speakers all around with JVC KD-AVX1 dvd head
-Short shifter, symborski shift kit, shifter cable bushings
-Punishment racing downpipe with full 3" thermal catback and high flow cat (it's va emissions legal)
-Walbro 190 with pte 880cc injectors
-3 pod pillar with oil pressure, water temp, and boost gauges
-Incoming gauge cluster for wideband gauge
-Eclipse 2gb front bumper
-Injen intake with huge k&n filter
-N1 Exhaust just installed
-I have a brand new test pipe that hasn't been installed

Any helpful input will be much appreciated.

Do you have pics of the car? Do you know if any maintenance has been done? What kind of condition is the car in? Big project, hack job? What kinda of price we looking at, or what are you trading?

That's the link to the original thread he said he hasn't had any major problems but I haven't asked him where he got all the work done yet. He said he wants $6500 but it would be a straight up trade for my celica and he would throw in all the extra parts he has.

The interior looks clean but the cars been painted and the body doesn't look to be in great shape. The engine doesn't look to bad needs a good clean and a lot of wire/vacuum line clean up. Like i already said I'd definitely wanna know if it had the major maintenance done and condition of clutch as well as the usual used car things you look for. Take it for good test drive and see what you think. Get a car fax and just look over everything and see if it's been hacked up and beaten or what the deal is.
What info do you have on your celica so i can compare the car's

Basically I just have intake, exhaust, clutch, flywheel, short shifter, springs, rear strut bar. He says he wants something that is newer and won't get tickets in. Kelly blue book on my car is around $8000 so do you think I should ask for some cash on top??

That isn't a lot of miles for the year of the car. Figure average is 13k-15k a year for a car.

The car is pretty lightly modded which is a good thing. Check to see when the last timing belt job was done. Should have just been done. If not put aside $600 for the job right away.

make sure you do compression on it before you buy it, 6500 seems about right if the cars in great condition. it may even be on the higher side. id ask for $$$ on top. also, remember youre going to be fixing stupid little problems all the time, especially if you start putting down some power.

Well- I am sure most of you know that before the revised thrust bearing Mitsu. introduced in late 98-99 the 7 bolts had crankwalk issues. Ask the owner if it's the original engine and if the car has an aftermarket clutch. Although the cause of crankwalk has been disputed nonstop there are number of things it "could" be. Aftermarket clutches DO put more stress on the trust bearing- which could possibly lead to crankwalk. Make sure the timing belt has been done recently- it's right at the 60k service point. Some 7 bolts never walk though, it's a gamble usually.

Anyhow- check the compression- it's a 2G with higher compression pistons than a 1G so you will be lookin for around 155-160 on each cylinder.

Rest your foot on the clutch and make sharp left and right turns- make sure it stays firm.

See what kind of tune he is running with and how much boost he is running- did he tune it himself or have it dyno tuned?

Take a hard look at the current owner- does he look like a dumbass?

It's a DSM- they can be great or very crappy.

lol I got 137,500 and it probably runs stronger then your car.

I personally wouldn't worry about the crankwalk, with those miles and mods it should be fine. 95's aren't that probable to crankwalk, its mostly the later years. Just drive it and possibly have a mechanic look at it. Look to see if some parts are hacked on or has had hacked work. See if it's leaking anything. Do a compression test. Listen for abnormal sounds. You know, just play it smart.

beat the ever living hell out of it on a test drive. I do it on all of mine, obviously nothing crazy, but i dont want to buy a car only to find out the clutch is slipping later because i never went WOT on the test drive.

Not at all. I have seen many, many run well past 130k. I see no problem with this one except for the guys claims. This car will not beat MOST c5 z06's. Regular C5s run high 12s to low 13s stock. I would say that should be where this car is. I would not count on beating a z06.

yes, the 16g can deff make some decent power, but you have to take into account the other mods as well as the weight of the car.

Yea. The max your gonna get out of a Big 16g is like 400whp. That's ported and clipped. As well as massive supporting mods.
